Free from Expectations

Welcome to 2017!
2017

I think that we say the same thing every year, but, doesn’t time fly!!

Where does the time go?

How can it be 2017 already?

What happened to 2016?
2016

We cannot stop or even slow down time.

I wonder what this year will be like?

People often wish that they had a crystal ball:

A magical way of looking into the future.

We want to know what is going to happen.

We feel that we need to know what we will be like in the future.

Is everything going to be ok?

Will I be healthy?

What about my family?

What about my job?
What about other things going on in the world?

One thing that surprised me when I first came to Japan was that there were so many so-called fortune tellers.

When I went sightseeing, or shopping, there were often people sitting at small tables on street corners.

And long lines of people would be waiting by those tables to have their palms read.

People wanting to know the future.

People wanting to know what will happen to them.

People wanting answers to the questions about their lives.

We want to know what is going to happen.

We feel that we need to know what we will be like in the future.

What do you want to do in the coming year?

What do you expect will happen in the future?

What do you want be like?

Do you think about these things?

Do you worry about these things?

Or, do you try to not think about them?

Let’s turn these questions around.

What do you think other people want you to do in the coming year?

What do you think other people expect you to do?

What do you think other people want you to be like?

Do you think about these things?

Do you worry about these things?

Or, do you try to not think about them?

When you have an expectation about something, it means that you don’t yet actually know the outcome of what will happen.

You think that something should happen at a particular time, or in a particular way.

But you have no prior knowledge of whether it will actually turn out like that or not.

Now, expectations are a double edged sword.

They can have both a positive or a negative influence on us.

On the positive side, expectations can motivate us.

Expectations can encourage us to do good things.

If our hearts tell us that we want to please someone, then we will want to meet what we think they expect of us.

So, that might influence us to do some things because they are good;

Or, alternatively, that might influence us to not do some things because they are not good.

And the result of seeking to meet those expectations is that we feel satisfied with our decisions and actions.

On the other hand, however, expectations can also be a burden.

It can be very hard when we feel that we have to do things, or say things, only because we think someone else wants us to.

And it can be frustrating to feel that you can’t say or do what you want because of what you think other people expect of you.

At these times, the decisions and actions that we undertake are not really our own.

They do not come from our hearts.

We are only trying to meet externally imposed obligations.

Moreover, if something is an obligation, it also becomes a responsibility.

If someone is obliged to do that thing.

There is a personal responsibility to do that thing.

It means that we must do that thing, regardless of our feelings, and even if we think we are incapable.

And so instead of leaving us satisfied and fulfilled, expectations can leave us with feelings of stress, resentment, and even anger.

What expectations do you hold in your hearts?

What expectations do you have for yourself, or for other people?

And what expectations do you think other people have for you?

Do these expectations fill your heart with joy and freedom?

Or do these expectations bind your heart with heavy oppression?

Expectations are basically clear cut matters.

We either meet those expectations, or we do not.

It is yes or no.

We either do or we don’t.

Pass or fail.

It is black or white.

Right or wrong.

So, what is the result of living out our lives by setting expectations, and then trying to live up to expectations?

We can get stuck in a cycle of controlling and being controlled.

There is a constant power struggle.

And this does not lead to freedom!

How do you feel about living up to other people’s expectations?

What about your own expectations?

………..

A couple of years ago, there was a popular trend where many Christians carried things with them that had WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?) written on them.

The idea (purpose) was that when they looked at those letters, people would try to imagine what Jesus would do in any particular situation.

They would then try and be like that.

So, people’s intentions were to try to become like Jesus.

And to do this, they would try to copy Jesus in their own lives.

Now, this seems to be a very fine thing.

After all, the Bible encourages us to become like Jesus, right?

Shouldn’t we be trying to become like Jesus?

Well, yes, that’s right.

God tells us from the beginning of the Old Testament that He created us in His own image.

God made us to be like Jesus.

And He exhorts us throughout the New Testament to become like Jesus.

But the question that we must ask is: “Does God expect us to become like Jesus?”
Are we able to live up to the expectation of becoming like Jesus?

Is this what God expects of us?

Well, let’s think for a moment about one part of the Bible.

Most people in most countries have probably heard of the Ten Commandments, even if they have never read the Bible before.

Now, because they are called commandments, there is an automatic interpretation that they carry with them the expectation that those commandments be obeyed.

Let’s quickly look at the Ten Commandments now:

"You shall have no other gods before me;

"You shall not make for yourself an idol;

"You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God,

  • "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

  • "Honor your father and your mother,

  • "You shall not murder.

  • "You shall not commit adultery.

  • "You shall not steal.

  • "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

  • "You shall not covet (Exodus 20:3-17)

There naturally seems to be the expectation of obedience.

And in a sense, that is certainly true.

However, I want to consider this from two particular angles.

The first, as we have seen, is that expectations are clear cut matters.
まず、

We either meet those expectations, or we do not.

It is black or white.

We pass, or we fail.

So, does God expect us to obey the Ten Commandments in order to become like Jesus?

Jesus declared that the Truth will set us free.

But if God does have this expectation of us, then would this expectation fill our hearts with a sense of freedom, or would it weigh it down with stress, fear and guilt?

In a black and white, pass or fail situation, who is able to pass?

Who is able to earn their freedom?

What kind of a god would burden its creation with such an impossible, unbearable burden?

There is another angle that I want to consider this matter from.

Again, as we have seen, it is that the one who holds an expectation still does not know what the actual outcome will be.

So, if God holds the expectation that we obey the Ten Commandments, God therefore doesn’t know whether we will actually obey them or not.

And if God doesn’t know that outcome, He is not the All-knowing God that He declares Himself to be in the Bible.

So, does God expect us to obey the Ten Commandments?

How should we respond to God?

Well, let’s return to the matter of “What Would Jesus Do?”

When people first started to follow Jesus, they were known as followers of “The Way.”

This was no doubt in reference to Jesus declaration about Himself that John records:
  • (Jesus answered,) "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

Jesus does not call us to build our lives by copying Him.

Christianity is not a religion to learn another way of life, as though there are many valid ways of life.

In Japanese, Christianity is called “kirisuto-kyo” – the “teachings of Christ.”

But Jesus doesn’t teach us that He has a better way of living, and that if we do the same, then we will become happy.

Jesus declares that He is “ the way and the truth and the life.”

The nature of sin is the desire for independence from God.

The consequence of sin is therefore separation from God.

It is losing God’s life from within us.

But without God’s life within us, we can never be like Jesus;

We cannot respond to the expectations of the Ten Commandments.

Jesus calls us to surrender our quest to try to find life independently from God.

Christianity, following Jesus, means receiving Jesus’ own life into ourselves.

It is a personal relationship.

Jesus doesn’t call us to copy Him, but to receive Him – to receive back His life into us:

To become connected to the source of life, through Him.

To find new life in Him.

To experience His life within us.

That we would be alive through His life being in us.

So Jesus doesn’t expect us to fulfill the Ten Commandments ourselves.

That is impossible.

Instead, Jesus offers us His own life through which these Ten Commandments are perfectly fulfilled.

2016 was a year that has brought us to a crossroads in history.

The political, economic, social, and even climatic world is changing dramatically.

We don’t know what is going to happen in 2017.
2017

We don’t know what is going to happen around the world.

We don’t even know what is going to happen in our own lives.

There might be many different expectations.

But there is so much uncertainty.

But Jesus tells us that in spite of all the trouble of this world, when we trust Him, we can nevertheless have certainty, and security, in our lives.

Jesus’ disciple, John explains:

  • Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)
    愛する者たち。私たちは、今すでに神の子どもです。後の状態はまだ明らかにされていません。しかし、キリストが現れたなら、私たちはキリストに似た者となることがわかっています。なぜならそのとき、私たちはキリストのありのままの姿を見るからです。(ヨハネ第一3章2節)

Even though we don’t know what will happen in the future;

Even though we don’t even know what will happen to ourselves;

We can have certainty about what we are becoming.

In the future, we shall be like Jesus.

John is telling us that this is what will happen.

This is what we shall be like.

With Jesus’ own life within us, we shall be like Jesus.

If God already knows this about us, then God would not need to expect this of us.

To expect this would mean that God doesn’t yet know what will actually happen.

But we are told here that we shall (!) be like Jesus.

God encourages us to see this amazing potential in which He has created us.

This is what God wants us to think about – to take away our fears!

God wants us to know this awesome promise that He has guaranteed for us.

This is what God wants us to know about our future – to give us hope and peace!

When you surrender your efforts to try to be good without God;

When you receive Jesus’ own life into yourself,

then you will become like Jesus.

You will be free from the expectations that have controlled us.

You will live joined together with God. You will know Him.

And the Ten Commandments will be fulfilled within you.
There won’t be any more desiring and searching for meaning and satisfaction for your life in things as a replacement for God.

So, every day shall be a Sabbath for you, because you will be a person who always finds their rest and fulfillment completely satisfied in Jesus.

And because your soul is completely satisfied, your other relationships shall also follow the call of the Ten Commandments:

Your relationship with all other people will be fully pure and wholesome.

You shall be a person who honors their parents.

And for the same reason, you shall be a person who doesn’t murder.

You shall be a person who doesn’t commit adultery.

You shall be a person who doesn’t steals things from other people.

You shall be a person who doesn’t tell lies about other people.

You shall be a person who doesn’t covet other people’s things.

What kind of a year will 2017 be?

I don’t know.

But I would like to join together with you in experiencing the freedom of life that Jesus offers to us.

This is the life that frees us from the expectations of this world, and from our own expectations.

Jesus promises that His is the life that shall give us the deepest and fullest satisfaction.

It is the life that will restore to us the fullness of the amazing, eternal, potential that God has created us to enjoy.
