John 4:19-21 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." 21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. ヨハネ４章１９節〜２１節 19 女は言った。「先生。あなたは預言者だと思います。 20 私たちの父祖たちはこの山で礼拝しましたが、あなたがたは、礼拝すべき場所はエルサレムだと言われます。」 21 イエスは彼女に言われた。「わたしの言うことを信じなさい。あなたがたが父を礼拝するのは、この山でもなく、エルサレムでもない、そういう時が来ます。
When I was an early teenager, there was something that really used to annoy me. 私は１０代のはじめころ、ほんとうにいやだなぁ～と思うことがありました。
It always happened whenever I met someone I hadn’t seen for a long time. 長いこと会っていなかった人と久しぶりに会うときはいつもそうでした。
It seemed that there was no way to escape this embarrassing ritual. この恥ずかしいことを逃れることはできませんでした。 People would look at me, and I knew exactly what they were going to say: 私を見て彼らは絶対こういうとわかっていました。
“Goodness me, haven’t you grown!” 「おや、大きくなったんじゃない？」
Yappari! ほら、やっぱり！
“You’re so tall now. 「とっても背が高くなったね！」
“You’re nearly as tall as your mother! 「お母さんと同じくらい背が高くなったね！」
“You could almost grow a beard now! 「あごひげをはやしてもいいんじゃない？」
“Isn’t your voice getting deep!” 「声が低くなったよねえ？」
Ahh, it was so embarrassing! あぁ、めんどくさい！
How could I protect myself from these embarrassing remarks? 私はどのようにしてこの恥ずかしいご指摘から自分自身を守れたのでしょうか？
My friends and I eventually decided that the best form of defense was attack. 友達も私もついに決心しました。防御の最善の方法は攻撃でした。
So, when we met an adult we hadn’t seen for a while, we got in first… だから、久しぶりに会った大人に、先にこう言っちゃいました。
Yes! I’ve grown! 「そうです！私は大きくなりました！」
Look, I’m nearly as tall as mum now; I am getting whiskers, and yes, my voice IS changing! 「ほら、私はもうお母さんと同じくらい背が高くなったし、ほおひげだって生えています。そして、声も変わってきています！」
haaaaaa (sigh!) はぁぁ・・・。
It was obvious that we were changing. 私たちが変わってきているのはまちがいないことでした。
And the changes that were taking place within us were all natural. そして私たちの中に起こっている変化はすべて自然なことでした。
But what was difficult was that we had no control over those changes that were taking place within us! しかし、難しかったのは、私たちの中に起こっていた変化には全くコントロールができなかったということでした。
And more than that, the changes that were taking place were very closely associated with our identity. そして、それ以上に、起こっていた変化は自己認識にとても関係していました。
We had always been children. 私たちはずっと子供でした。
And we were used to being children. 子どもであることに慣れていました。
But now we were changing. しかし、今私たちは変わろうとしていました。
We were being transformed. 私たちは変身しようとしていました。
Of course, we were the same people. もちろん、私たちは同じ人でした。
And yet, we were becoming something new. でも、同時に何か新しいものになろうとしていたのです。
That’s what transformation is. それが変身です。
Transformation is when something is changed from one thing into something new. 変身とは、何かが元のものから、何か新しいものになることです。
Transformation involves movement. 変身には移動が伴われます。
Something was “here.” 何かとは、“ここ”でした。
Then it is moved to “here.” “ここ”に移動にされます。
The “trans” in “trans-form” is the same “trans” that is in “trans-port.” “trans-form”の“trans”は“trans-port”の“trans”と同じ意味です。
It means to move from one place to another. ある場所から別の場所へと移動することを意味しています。
And the “form” in “transform” means substance. そして、“transform”の“form”は中身を意味します。
So, with “transform” the “form”, the substance of something is moved from “here” to “here.” つまり、“transform”の“form”には、何かの中身が“ここ”から“ここ”へ移動されるのです。
Something was like “this”… 何かとは、“この”ようなものした。
but then it became like “this.” そして、“この”ようなものになりました。
In other words, “transformation” is change. 言い換えれば、“transformation”とは変化です。
We have been looking at a meeting that took place at a well between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. 私たちはイエス様とサマリアの女が井戸で出会った出来事を前から見ています。
As we look deeper into this story, we see that there is a transformation taking place within this woman. この物語をよく見ると、私たちはこの女に起こった変化を見出します。
This woman is changing. この女は変わろうとしています。
This woman is being changed. この女は変えられています。
And this transformation is taking place because of her meeting with Jesus. そしてこの変化はイエス様とこの女の出会いのゆえに起こっています。
Jesus was the reason for her transformation. イエス様が彼女の変化の理由でした。
Jesus was the cause of her transformation. イエス様こそが彼女の変化の原因でした。
In the course of this meeting, the conversation between Jesus and the woman took several unexpected turns. この出会いの中で、イエス様と女の間の会話には予想外の変化がありました。
We particularly focused on that last month. 先月、特にその場面に注目しました。
And now, another unexpected thing happens. ところで、もうひとつ別のことも起こっているんです。
The woman turned to Jesus and suddenly said: その女はイエス様の方を向き、突然こう言いました。
• "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. (John 4:19) 女は言った。「先生。あなたは預言者だと思います。（ヨハネ４章１９節）
When people hear the word "prophecy," they often imagine people foretelling what will happen in the future. 人々は『預言』と言う言葉を聞くと、未来に起こることを予告する人のことを思い浮かべます。
The Bible contains a lot of prophecy. 聖書には多くの預言が書かれています。
In some cases, God did speak through the prophets to show what would happen in the future. 時に、神様は預言者を通して実際にこれから起こることを語られていました。
But actually, most of the time, God spoke through the prophets about the present. しかし実際には、多くの場合、神様は預言者を通して現在のことを語られました。
The first role of the prophets was to make clear to the Israelites, God’s children, that they were living with their backs turned to God, their Heavenly Father. 預言者の最初の役割は、神様の子供であるイスラエルの人々に教えを示すためのものでした。彼らは天の父なる神様に背を向けて生きていたことの教えでした。
However, God’s purpose was not to punish them, but to call them home. しかし、神様の目的は彼らを罰するためのものではなく、彼らをご自分の元に呼び戻すためのものでした。
So, when Jesus pointed out the extent of this woman’s problems, His purpose was not to accuse her. だから、イエス様がこの女が抱える問題を明確にしたのも、イエス様の目的は彼女を責めることではありませんでした。
Instead, He was revealing His understanding of her situation; そうではなく、イエス様は彼女の心境を理解していることを明らかにしていました。
He was expressing his compassion for her; イエス様は彼女に対するあわれみを述べました。
And He was revealing His desire that, in the midst of her desperation, she would not turn to run away and hide; そして、イエス様は彼女が逆境の中にあっても、逃げたり、隠れたりしないように望んでおられたのです。
Jesus wanted her to turn to Himself to find her healing in Him. イエス様は彼女がイエス様の中に癒しを見出すことを望みました。
So, Jesus interacted with this woman openly in the truth of who she really was; イエス様は彼女の本当の姿をそのまま受け入れて取り扱いました。
His purpose was not to judge her, but to call her out of her hiding; イエス様の目的は彼女をさばくことではなく、彼女が隠れている状態から呼び戻すことでした。
Jesus wanted to restore her relationship with God. イエス様は神様と彼女との関係を回復させたかったのです。
And what was her response to Jesus? 彼女のイエス様への反応はどうだったでしょう？
• "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. (John 4:19) 女は言った。「先生。あなたは預言者だと思います。（ヨハネ４章１９節）
Jesus, a prophet? イエス様が預言者？
Was Jesus a prophet? イエス様は預言者だったのでしょうか？
The woman continued: この女はこう続けました。
• Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." 私たちの父祖たちはこの山で礼拝しましたが、あなたがたは、礼拝すべき場所はエルサレムだと言われます。」
• Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. (John 4:20-21) イエスは彼女に言われた。「わたしの言うことを信じなさい。あなたがたが父を礼拝するのは、この山でもなく、エルサレムでもない、そういう時が来ます。（ヨハネ４章２０節〜２１節）
Through this short talk with Jesus, the woman's attention has now been turned to the matter of worshipping God. イエス様との短い会話を通して、女の考えは神様への崇拝へと向いていきました。
And so she asked Jesus a key question that lay at the heart of the bitter animosity between the Jews and the Samaritans. そこで、彼女はイエス様にユダヤ人とサマリヤ人の間に合った敵意の根底にあったことについての質問をしました。
The question was about which was actually the right place to worship God. その質問は神様への礼拝をする正しい場所についてのものでした。
Was it right to worship God on the mountain in Jerusalem; エルサレムの山の上で神様を礼拝することは正しいことだったのでしょうか？
Or was the temple that the Samaritans had built on their own mountain the place where God should really be worshipped? それともサマリア人が自分の国の山の上に彼らが建てた神殿が本当は神様を礼拝すべき、正しい場所だったのでしょうか？
As we look at Jesus’ response, there is one thing that I want to turn our attention to. イエス様の反応を見る中で、私は一緒に注目したいものがあります。
It is how Jesus talked about God. イエス様はどのように神様について語ったか、ということです。
In His answer to the woman about worship, Jesus did not say: when you “worship God.” サマリアの女の礼拝についての質問の答えの中に、イエス様は「あなたが神様を礼拝するとき」とは言われませんでした。
Jesus could have used the word God. イエス様は「神様」という言葉を使っても良かったのに
He could have used the word "Lord." イエス様は「主」という言葉を使っても良かったのに
Jesus could have used a variety of names that were used to refer to God. イエス様は神様のことを指す多くの名前を使っても良かったのに
But He didn't. しかし、イエス様はそうしませんでした。
• Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. (John 4:21) イエスは彼女に言われた。「わたしの言うことを信じなさい。あなたがたが父を礼拝するのは、この山でもなく、エルサレムでもない、そういう時が来ます。（ヨハネ４章２１節）
Why did Jesus refer to God as "the Father" here? なぜイエス様はここで神様のことを「父」と言い表したのでしょう？
I think that the reason Jesus used the word “Father” here is the key to understanding this meeting between Jesus and this woman. イエス様がここで「父」という言葉を使ったのは、イエス様とこの女の出会いを理解するための鍵になる、と私は思います。
In fact, I think that this word: “Father” is the key to understanding not only Jesus Himself, but the entire meaning of the Bible. 事実、この「父」という言葉はイエス様ご自身のみならず、聖書全体を理解する鍵になる言葉だと私は思います
Let’s have a look at it. そのことについて見てみましょう。
I think that Jesus is first speaking into the Samaritan woman’s personal situation. イエス様は先ず、サマリアの女自身の心境に対して言及していたと思います。
When she asked Jesus about WHERE to worship, she stated: “our fathers (meaning her ancestors) worshiped on this mountain…” 女が礼拝すべき場所がどこか、ということについてたずねたとき、彼女は「（自分の祖先を意味する）父たちはこの山の上で礼拝していた」と言いました。
Moreover, when Jesus talked about offering the woman Living Water, she retorted defensively that Jacob’s Well had been good enough for her fathers – meaning her ancestors. そのうえ、イエス様が生ける水を提供することについて話したとき、彼女は防御的に言い返しました。ヤコブの井戸は自分の父たち、つまり、自分の父祖たちにとって十分だったと言っていたのです。
This woman was full of problems and pain. この女は問題と痛みだらけでした。
She had been rejected by her own people. 彼女は自身の仲間に拒絶されていました。
And yet at the same time, when she talked to Jesus, she was still seeking her security in her cultural heritage. それにしても、彼女がイエス様に話しかけたとき、彼女はまだ自分の文化的境遇を自分の盾にしていたのです。
She is focused on the external matters of place and tradition. 彼女は場所と伝統という表面的なものを頼りにしようとしていました。
So, Jesus turns the focus here away both place and culture. だから、イエス様は彼女の注目を場所からも文化からも離そうとしたわけです。
The issue was not between Jewish “fathers” and Samaritan “fathers.” 論点はユダヤ人の「父、父祖」とサマリア人の「父、父祖」ではありませんでした。
And the important thing was not WHERE God should be worshiped. そして、重要なことは神様を礼拝する場所でもありませんでした。
Not this mountain, or that mountain. この山でも、あの山でもありません。
Jesus was turning this woman’s focus to WHO should be worshiped. イエス様はこの女の関心を、どなたを礼拝すべきか、に向けていました。
Not WHERE, but WHO! どこ、ではなく、どなたか、です！
Jesus was declaring to this woman that there is a Father who should be worshiped. イエス様はこの女に、礼拝すべき父がいることを述べていました。
Jesus is pointing out to this woman that God should be worshiped because He is THE Father! イエス様は神様が礼拝されすべきお方だとこの女に指し示していらっしゃいます。なぜなら天の父なる神様こそ真の父だからです！
Next, Jesus is pointing out that because God is the true Father, God has children. 次にイエス様は、神様は真の父でいらっしゃるので、子供をお持ちだとおっしゃいます。
What makes a father? 何が父にするのでしょう？
There is one condition to being a father: 父になるためには条件が一つです。
You must have children. 子どもがいることです。
If you don’t have children, you cannot be a father. Right?! 子どもがいなければ、お父さんにはなれませんよね？
Jesus referred to God as the “Father.” イエス様は神様のことを「父」と呼びました。
If God is a father, that means that God must have children. もし神様がお父さんなら、神様は子どもがいるということです。
So, who are God’s children? では、神様の子どもは誰なんでしょうか？
Jesus has already indicated that God’s children are not His children because of where they were born, or because of where their ancestors came from.
イエス様はすでにおっしゃっています。神様の子供は、生まれた場所、祖先によるものではないのです。
Rather, the answer is provided for us in John 1:12 and 13. その答えはヨハネの福音書の１章12節と13節にあります。
• (Yet) to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— （しかし、）この方を受け入れた人々、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、神の子どもとされる特権をお与えになった。
• children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. (John 1:12,13) この人々は、血によってではなく、肉の欲求や人の意欲によってでもなく、ただ、神によって生まれたのである。（ヨハネ一章１２節〜１３節）
God is the Father to people who receive Jesus. 神様はイエス様を受け入れる人々の父なのです。
God becomes the Father to everyone who receives Jesus. 神様はイエス様を受け入れる人みんなの父になります。
This is a transformation. これが変化です。
It is a change from one thing to another; これが一つのものから別のものへと変わる変化です。
from one form to another. ある形からちがうものへ
From one identity to a new identity. ある存在から新しい存在へ、ということです。
People who were not God’s children, become God’s children. 神様の子供ではなかった人々が神様の子供になるのです。
People who were separated, disconnected, enter into a personal, intimate, relationship with the Creator and sustainer of life. 神様から隔てられ、分断されていた人々が、造り主との個人的な、親密な関係の中に入り、永遠の命の中に入るのです。
Or, as Paul bluntly says in Colossians 2:13, people who were dead, become people who are alive: パウロがコロサイ２：１３で率直告げているように言い変えれば死んでいた人が生きた人になるのです。
• (When) you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, (Colossians 2:13) あなたがたは罪によって、また肉の割礼がなくて死んだ者であったのに、神は、そのようなあなたがたを、キリストとともに生かしてくださいました。それは、私たちのすべての罪を赦し、（コロサイ２章１３節）
In other words, people who are not children of God are separated from God because their sins have not been forgiven. いうなれば、神様の子供ではない人々は罪が赦されていないから、神様から隔てられています。
Their sins are not forgiven only because they haven’t believed in Jesus. 彼らの罪はイエス様を信じていないがために赦されていません。
On the other hand, people who are God’s children became so because their sins have been forgiven. 一方、赦されているから神様の子供になっているのです。
And their sins have been forgiven only because they have believed in Jesus. イエス様のことを信じたが為に、罪を赦されたのです。
• Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— (John 1:12) （しかし、）この方を受け入れた人々、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、神の子どもとされる特権をお与えになった。（ヨハネ一章１２節）
So, what is it about Jesus that makes Him so important? さて、なぜイエス様はこんなに中心的なお方でしょうか？
What gives Jesus the right to be the key, the reason, for the forgiveness of sin? 何故イエス様が罪を赦される鍵、理由になるのでしょう？
Why does God give people the right to become His own children because they believed in Jesus? なぜ神様は、イエス様を信じることで神様の子供になることができる権利を与えてくださったのでしょう？
The answer to this is also contained in why Jesus referred to God as “the Father” when talking to the Samaritan woman. このことへの答えもイエス様がサマリアの女と話しているとき「父」として神様を呼んだことに反映されています。
That’s because God is the Father of Jesus! それは、神様がイエス様の父だからです！
Jesus is the unique Son of God. イエス様は元々神様の唯一の子なのです。
We read from John 5:17-24 a little earlier. 先ほどヨハネの福音書の5章17節から24節を一緒に読みました。
It’s a little long, but I want to read it again now. 少し長いですが、もう一度読んでみたいと思います。
• Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." イエスは彼らに答えられた。「わたしの父は今に至るまで働いておられます。ですからわたしも働いているのです。」
• For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. このためユダヤ人たちは、ますますイエスを殺そうとするようになった。イエスが安息日を破っておられただけでなく、ご自身を神と等しくして、神を自分の父と呼んでおられたからである。
• Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. そこで、イエスは彼らに答えて言われた。「まことに、まことに、あなたがたに告げます。子は、父がしておられることを見て行う以外には、自分からは何事も行うことができません。父がなさることは何でも、子も同様に行うのです。
• For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. それは、父が子を愛して、ご自分のなさることをみな、子にお示しになるからです。また、これよりもさらに大きなわざを子に示されます。それは、あなたがたが驚き怪しむためです。
• For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 父が死人を生かし、いのちをお与えになるように、子もまた、与えたいと思う者にいのちを与えます。
• Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, また、父はだれをもさばかず、すべてのさばきを子にゆだねられました。
• that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. それは、すべての者が、父を敬うように子を敬うためです。子を敬わない者は、子を遣わした父をも敬いません。
• "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. (John 5:17-24) まことに、まことに、あなたがたに告げます。わたしのことばを聞いて、わたしを遣わした方を信じる者は、永遠のいのちを持ち、さばきに会うことがなく、死からいのちに移っているのです。
Jesus is THE Son of God. イエス様は元々神様の子です。
When you believe in Jesus, you cross from death to life. イエスを信じると、死から生へと移されます。
You become a child of God. 神様の子供になるのです。
This is a transformation. これが変化です。
You become transformed. 変化させられるのです。
You become a new creation. 新しいものに造りかえられます。
The One who transforms us, the One who recreates us, is God. 私たちを変える方、私たちを造りかえる方は神様です。
God does this through His Son, Jesus. 神様はご自身の子であるイエス様を通して、それをなさいます。
He does this when we put our trust in Jesus. 私たちがイエス様に信頼をおくとき、神様はそのようにされます。
When we put our trust in Jesus, we become God’s children. 私たちがイエス様に信頼をおくとき、私たちは神様の子供になるのです。
God becomes our Father. 神様が私たちの父になるのです。
And the whole point of this, therefore, is that God, as our Father, is the object of true worship. それゆえ、私たちの父である神様が礼拝の対象になります。
The Father is the focus of worship. 天の父こそが礼拝の中心です。
The Father is the reason for worship. 天の父こそが礼拝の理由です。
So worshiping God is not dependent on WHERE our ancestors worshiped. だから神様を礼拝することは先祖がどこで礼拝をしたかに左右されません。
It is not dependent on HOW our ancestors worshiped. 先祖がどのように礼拝していたかにも左右されません。
Our culture and traditions of worship are not important to God. 私たちが持つ礼拝の文化と伝統は神様にとって重要ではないのです。
The important thing to God is that we receive Him as our Father; 神様にとって重要なことは、私たちが神様を父として受け入れることなのです。
The important thing to God is that we come to Him as His children. 神様にとって重要なことは、私たちが神様のもとに神様の子供として歩みよることなのです。
And the way, the only way that we can become children of God is through personally receiving God’s true Son, Jesus. そして、神様の子供になれる唯一の方法は、神様の真の子であるイエス様を受け入れることです。
Jesus, the Son, is central to worship of God, the Father. 神様の子であるイエス様は、父なる神様を礼拝をするための中心です。
In John 2:19, Jesus declared: ヨハネの福音書の2章19節でイエス様はこのようにおっしゃいました。
• "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." (John 2:19) エスは彼らに答えて言われた。「この神殿をこわしてみなさい。わたしは、三日でそれを建てよう。」（ヨハネ２章１９節）
But Jesus was not talking about the building that people went to. しかしイエス様は人々が通っていた建物を指して話していませんでした。
Jesus was referring to His own body. イエス様はご自身の身体のことをおっしゃていました。
He was declaring that He Himself was the new Temple. イエス様はご自身が新しい神殿だと述べていました。
Worshipping God is not dependent on being in a particular place. 神様を礼拝することは特別な場所にいることによりません。
It does not require specific, tradition or cultural rituals. 特別なこと、伝統、文化的儀式など求められていません。
The “place” of worship is being together with Jesus. 礼拝の場所はイエス様とともにいることです。
The “focus”, the “object” of worship is God, as our Father. 礼拝の目的、対象は、私たちの父としていてくださる神様です。
The “way” of worship is in trusting in the Son: Jesus. 礼拝の方法は、神様の真の子であるイエス様を信じることです。
Do you know Jesus as the Prophet who lovingly reveals our hearts? 愛をこめて私たちの心の奥にあるものを明らかにしてくださる預言者としてのイエス様を知っていますか？
Do you know Jesus as the Living Water who gives eternal life? 永遠の命を与える生ける水としてのイエス様を知っていますか？
Do you know Jesus as the Son of God who transforms you from death to life and makes you a child of God? 死から生へと移し、神様の子供にしてくださる、神様の子であるイエス様を知っていますか？
• (Yet) to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— (John 1:12) （しかし、）この方を受け入れた人々、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、神の子どもとされる特権をお与えになった。（ヨハネ一章１２節）
Father God, 天のお父様、
I thank you that we can all call You our Father. 私たちはあなたを私たちのお父さんと呼ぶことができることをかんしゃします。
We can all come to You as Your children. あなたの子供としてあなたにすがることができます。
Lord, we have all come from different family backgrounds. 主よ、私たちは皆違う家族背景を持っています。
Each one of our experience of family is different. 私たち一人一人の家族経験が異なるでしょう。
But in You, we can know the perfect Father. しかし、あなたにあって完璧な父を知ることができます。
We can receive Your acceptance and love; あなたに受け入れられ、あなたの愛を受けることができます。
We can know your protection and peace; あなたの見守りや平安を知ることができます。
We can share Your hope and joy. あなたの望みや喜びを共にすることができます。
Please help each one of us to come to You as Your children; どうか、私たち一人一人、あなたの子供としてあなたにすがることができますように、
To share together Your life that You give through Your Son Jesus; 私たちが、あなたの御子、イエス様を通してお与えになる命をいただき、分かち合うことができますように助けてください。
