John 4:25-26 25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." 26 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
Many years ago when I worked in Kyoto, I had the chance to work with a Japanese Canadian man called Walter. 何年も前 わたしが京都で働いていたとき、ウォルターという日系カナダ人と一緒に仕事をする機会がありました。
Walter was a lot older than me, but we became good friends and joked together a lot. ウォルターは私よりずっと年上でしたが私達は良い友達となり一緒によく冗談を言い交しました。
One day Walter asked me where I was originally from. ある日ウォルターが私に生まれはどこか尋ねました。
I told him: “Melbourne.” 「メルボルン」と答えました。
“Ahhh, Melbourne.” He replied. 「ああメルボルンか、」
“That’s down in the south, isn’t it.” 「あれはたしか南部だったね。」
“No.” I said. “It’s in the north.” 「いや 北部ですよ」と私は答えました。
“Huh?!” said Walter. “I could have sworn that it’s in the south.” 「えっ、絶対南部だと断言するよ」とウォルターは言いました。
“No, no, no.” I said. “It’s up the top! It’s definitely in the north!!” 「とんでもない、それは一番上まちがいなく北部ですよ」と私は言いました。
Poor Walter was confused, so I said I would prove it to him. 私は頭がごちゃごちゃになった可哀そうなウォルターを見て、それじゃ自分が正しいことを証明してみせると彼に言いました。
The next day, I brought a world map that I had, to show him. 翌日、自分が持っていた世界地図を持って来て彼に見せました。
But it was one of those joke souvenir maps which shows the world upside down. 然しそれは南北を逆さまにしたよくあるおもしろ土産の世界地図でした。
Have you seen them? Australia is on the top, and Japan is in the Southern Hemisphere. 皆さんはそんな地図を見たことありますか？オーストラリアが一番上（北）に位置し日本は南半球にあります。
And, of course, as I had been pointing out, Melbourne was in the north, right at the top of Australia! そして私が主張していた通りメルボルンは勿論北部つまりオーストラリアの天辺にありました。
Well, it happened that Walter was going back to Canada the next day. ところでそれはウォルターがたまたま翌日カナダに帰る日の事でした。
So I said to Walter: “Look, Walter, take this map back with you so you can learn your world geography.” そこで私は「ほら、ウォルター世界の地理を学べるようにこの地図を持って帰るといいよ」と言って彼にその地図を渡しました。
And do you know what he did? 彼はどうしたと思いますか？
He said: “Thanks Andrew. I’ll hang it in my office.” as he turned my upside down map upside down. 上下逆さまになっている地図をひっくり返しながら「アンドリュー、ありがとう。これを自分の事務所の壁に掛けるよ」と言ったのです。
I think it was me who was taught a lesson that day! 今思うとあの日教訓を学んだのはわたしでした。
As we have just read, we're continuing to look at the meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. つい先ほど読んでお分かりの通り引き続き私達はイエスさまとサマリヤの婦人との出会いのところを見ています。
Last month, we focused on the issue of transformation. 先月、私達は“変容”ということに焦点を当てました。
As we read more deeply about this woman, we see that there is a transformation taking place within her. この婦人の事についてより深く読み進めるにつれて彼女の中に変容が起こっていることが分かります。
Transformation involves movement. 変容は必然的に行動を伴います。
Transformation results in change. 変容の結果変化が生じます。
The transformation that is taking place within this woman is moving her from one condition to another. この婦人の中で起こっている変容は彼女をある状態から別の状態に変えています。
It is changing her from what she was, into something, into someone, new. これまでの彼女から別の新しいもの、新しい人に彼女を変えています。
This transformation took place because of her meeting with Jesus. この変容は彼女がイエス様と出会ったことによって起きました。
In other words, this woman was moved from one condition to another, and she was changed from what she was into someone new, because she met Jesus. つまりイエス様と出会ったためにこの婦人はある状態から別の状態に変えられ そしてかつての自分とは別の新しい人に変えられたのでした。
This meeting between the woman and Jesus was recorded by Jesus’ disciple, John. 婦人とイエス様のこの出会いはイエス様の弟子ヨハネによって記録されています。
But when we look at what John has written, we notice that it was not such a long meeting. しかしヨハネが書き記したものを見てみると二人の接触はそれほど長い時間ではなかったことに気付きます。
The woman did not get to know Jesus over a long period of time. その婦人は長い時間をかけてイエス様を知るようになったのではありません。
Neither did she have a lot of long conversations with him. またイエス様と何回も長い会話を交わしたのでもありませんでした。
Nevertheless, as we will continue to see, this brief meeting with Jesus turned this woman's life upside down. にもかかわらず続けて見て行と、私達はこの束の間のイエス様との出会いがこの婦人の人生をひっくり返したことに気付きます。
Or, perhaps, something like that world map, it is better to say that the woman’s life was originally upside down, but this meeting with Jesus turned her life the right way up. というよりむしろ あの世界地図のように、この婦人の人生は最初から逆さまになっていてそれがイエス様とのこの出会いによって本来あるべき姿に戻されたという方が良いかも知れません。
This woman's meeting with Jesus was brief. この婦人とイエス様との接触はほんの短い時間でした。
But at the same time, we can see that the transformation that took place within her was a process. しかし同時に、彼女の中で起きた変容はひとつの行程だったことが分かります。
In fact, there are four clear stages to this process. 実はこの行程には四つの明確な進行のプロセスつまり過程があります。
We're going to look at these four stages together now. 今から一緒にこの四つの過程を見ていきます。
The first stage is recorded in John four, verses 13 and 14: Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13,14) 最初の過程はヨハネ４章１３，１４節に記録されています。 イエスは答えて言われた。「この水を飲む者はだれでもまた 渇きます。 しかし、私が与える水を飲む者はだれでも決して渇くことがありません。 私が与える水は、その人のうちで泉となり、永遠の命への水が湧き出ます。」 At this point, the woman still had no idea what Jesus was talking about. この時点でその婦人はまだイエス様が何のことを話していたのか分かっていませんでした。
She had gone to the well at the hottest, most uncomfortable time of the day, in order to avoid meeting anyone else. 彼女は他の誰とも会わないで済むように一日の内で最も暑くそして最も不快な時間に井戸に行きました。
This woman was isolated and alone. この婦人は孤立していて一人ぼっちでした。
She had to struggle so hard all by herself to pull the water up out of that deep well. 彼女はあの深い井戸から誰の力も借りず一人で苦労して水を汲み上げなければなりませんでした。
She needed water to live, of course. もちろん彼女は生きるために水が必要でした。
But life was so hard just to get that water. けれども彼女にとってその水を得るだけでも大変な苦労でした。
And even when she did get the water, her soul was still thirsting to be filled. そしてたとえその水を飲んでも彼女の心の渇きは依然として充たされないままでした。
That water couldn’t provide true refreshing for her life. あの水は彼女の心身を真にリフレッシュすることは出来なかったのです。
But now Jesus was offering her something called “Living Water.” 然し今イエス様は“生ける水”を彼女に与えようとされています。
Jesus told her that whoever drinks the water from the well would just get thirsty again, イエス様はこの井戸から出る水を飲む者はだれでもまたすぐに渇きます、
But the “Living Water” that Jesus was offering her would “become a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” けれども自分が与える“生ける水は、その人のうちで泉となり永遠の命への水が湧き出ます”と彼女に言われました。
She still didn’t know who Jesus was. 彼女は依然としてイエス様が誰か分かりませんでした。
And she still didn’t understand what Jesus was offering her. そしてイエス様が彼女に何を与えようとされているのか理解できませんでした。
But this Living Water seemed to be the key for her to escape her present situation. 然しこの生ける水こそが彼女がその時の自分の状況から逃れるための鍵だったようです。
And Jesus was the One who was offering her this Living Water. そしてイエス様こそ彼女にこの生ける水を与えようとされた方でした。
So, the first stage of this woman’s transition was to know that Jesus is the One who offers Living Water. ですからこの婦人の変容の第一の過程はイエス様が彼女に生ける水を与えて下さる方であることを知ることでした。
The next stage of her transition is recorded in John 4:19.
"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. (John 4:19)
彼女の変容の第二過程はヨハネ書４章９節に記されています：
女は言った、「先生、あなたは預言者だと思います。」
Jesus had told the woman to go call her husband. イエス様は「行ってあなたの夫をここに呼んで来なさい」と婦人に言いました。
This would have been the last thing that she would have wanted to hear. これは彼女が絶対聞きたくなかった言葉だったでしょう。
Her relationship problems were the source of her grief and guilt. 自分には人とうまく付き合うことが出来ないという問題があることが彼女の深い悲しみや罪悪感の根元にありました。
They were the cause of her rejection. それらのことが彼女が人から拒絶された原因でした。
This was the very issue that she had planned her life around avoiding. 廻りから自分を遠ざけるように計画してきたのはまさにこの問題があったからでした。
But now, as she talked with Jesus, she was suddenly confronted face on with the one issue that she had been trying so hard to avoid. けれども今イエス様と話をしているときに自分がこれまで必死に避けようとして来た問題に突如彼女は直面することになりました。
But this time, the woman did not hide. しかし今回婦人は隠れませんでした。
She did not run away from the reality of her situation. 自分が置かれた現実から逃げませんでした。
She did not try to avoid the presence of her pain. 目の前の苦悩を回避しようとはしませんでした。
Instead, she responded to Jesus. そのかわりに彼女はイエス様に応えました。
She faced herself. 自身と向かい合いました。
She faced her truth. 自身の真実と正面から向かい合いました。
She told Jesus her truth. イエス様にその真実を語りました。
And as she did so, she discovered that in Jesus, she was completely known. そうしているうちに自分はイエス様に完全に知られていることに彼女は気付きました。
Jesus did know everything about her. イエス様は間違いなく彼女の全てを知っていました。
But while this was the reason for her distress with everyone else, with Jesus, it became her source of relief. イエス様以外の人に自分の事が知られるということが彼女の苦痛の理由でしたが逆に今は、イエス様に知られることが彼女の苦しみが和らぐ根拠となりました。
Jesus knew the truth about her. イエス様は彼女についての真実を知っていました。
And yet Jesus completely understood and accepted her. それにもかかわらずイエス様は彼女を完全に理解し受け入れました。
Jesus later declared that the truth will set you free. 後にイエス様は真理があなた方を自由にするとはっきり言われました。
This woman still did not know who Jesus really is. この婦人は依然としてイエス様が本当はどういう方なのか分かりませんでした。
But as she interacted with Him, her heart was being turned to God. しかしイエス様と相互にやり取りをしているうちに彼女の心は神に向けられはじめました。
Before God sent Jesus, He raised up prophets to communicate with people. 神はイエス様をこの世に送られる前に民と意思の疎通を図るため此の世に預言者を遣わされました。
The prophets were like GPS. 預言者はGPSのようなものでした。 （GPS - Global Positioning System －地球上の現在位置を測定するシステム）
They were a God Positioning System. 預言者は神の測位システムの役を務めました。
God spoke through the prophets to turn people’s hearts to Himself. 神は民の心をご自身に向けさせるため預言者を通して話しかけました。
Now, Jesus Himself was turning her heart towards God. いまイエス様は自ら彼女の心を神に向かわせています。
Jesus was transforming her heart. イエス様が彼女の心を変えています。
And although she still did not understand who Jesus really is, she respondedcorrectly by recognizing the prophetic work that Jesus was doing within her. そしていまだに本当のイエス様の事が分かっていなかったにもかかわらず、イエス様が彼女の中でなされた預言者的な働きに気が付いて彼女はイエス様に正しく応じました。
"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. (John 4:19)
女は言った、「先生、あなたは預言者だと思います。」
And now, with her attention being drawn to God, her focus is turned to who God really is. そして彼女の意識が神に引きつけられたいま彼女の焦点は真の神に向けられています。
What does it mean to turn to God? 神と向き合うとは何を意味するのでしょうか？
What does it mean to really worship God? 真に神を礼拝するとは何を意味するのでしょうか？
Jesus declared to the woman: イエスは彼女に言われた： You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 救いはユダヤ人かる出るのですから、私達は知って礼拝していますが、あなたがは知らないで礼拝しています。
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. しかし真の礼拝者たちが霊と真によって父を礼拝する時が来ます。今がその時です。父はこのような人々を礼拝者として求めておられるからです。
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." (John 4:22-24) 神は霊ですから、神を礼拝する者は、霊と真によって礼拝しなければなりません。 Jesus now gives the woman a lesson in spiritual geography. イエス様はいま霊的な地理においての神と人との正しい関係について婦人に教えを説いています。
The important thing with worshiping God is not where you worship; 神に礼拝を捧げる時に大切なことはどこで捧げるかではありません、
The focus of worship is not our customs and traditions. 礼拝の焦点は慣例や伝統ではありません。
The focus of worship, the object of worship, indeed the purpose of worship, is the One whom we worship. 礼拝の焦点、礼拝の対象、そして礼拝の目的は私たちが礼拝する父そのお方です。
John Piper helpfully teaches us that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. 私たちが神の中で最高に満ち足りた時に神の栄光が最もよく表されるとのジョンパイパーの教えは私達の理解を深めるのに大いに役立っています。
God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him! 私たちが神の中で最高に満ち足りた時に神の栄光が最もよく表されるのです。
So, to worship God in a way that is glorifying to Him, it is necessary for us to first be satisfied in Him. ですから神の栄光を表す礼拝を捧げるためにはまず私たちが神に満たされなければなりません。
But to be satisfied in God, we must first know God. しかし神に満たされるためにはまず神を知らなければなりません。
We have to know God personally. 私達は個人的に神を知らなければなりません。
We cannot be satisfied in God unless we know Him. 私たちが神を知ることなしには神に満たされることはあり得ないのです。
So, in this geography lesson for the soul, Jesus is pointing out that it is not knowing something about God that brings glory to Him. 霊に関してのこの地理学的な教えの中でイエス様は神についてただ知識を持つことで神の栄光が表されるわけではないことを明らかにしています。
We cannot truly worship God with just knowledge. 知識だけで真の礼拝を神に捧げることは出来ません。
True worship of God comes through actually knowing God personally. 神と個人的な関係をもつことにより真の礼拝を捧げることが出来るのです。
True worship is a celebration of personally being connected to God. 真の礼拝は神との個人的な結びつきを喜ぶことです。
Just prior to telling us about this meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, John records a conversation that Jesus had with Nicodemus. ヨハネは、イエス様とサマリヤの婦人とのこの出会いについて私達に伝える直前にイエス様がニコデモと交わした会話を記録しています。
Nicodemus was a Pharisee – one of the spiritual, social, political leaders of Israel. ニコデモはパリサイ派でユダヤ人の霊的、社会的、政治的指導者の一人でした。
And Jesus was teaching Nicodemus that if people want to enter into God’s kingdom; if people want to know God personally, if people want to be eternally connected to the Creator of life, then they have to be born again. そのときイエス様はニコデモにもし神の御国に入りたいと望むなら、もし神を個人的に知りたいと望むなら、もし命の創造主と永遠に結ばれたいと望むなら人は新しく生まれなければなりませんと説きました。
You have to be born of the Spirit. 人は御霊から生まれなければなりません。
Being born of the Spirit is made possible through believing in God’s own Son, Jesus. 神のみ子イエスを信じることによって御霊から生まれることが可能になります。
Paul teaches us in Galatians 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, <"Abba>, Father." (Galatians 4:6)
パウロはガラテヤ人への手紙４章６節で次のように説いています。
そしてあなたがたは子であるが故に神は “アバ、父”と呼ぶ、み子のみ霊を私たちの心に遣わしてくださいました。 The word “Abba” that Jesus used here is what small children would call their dads. イエス様がここで使われた“アバ”は幼子がお父さんを呼ぶときの幼児言葉です。
It is like the word “papa.” “パパ”に相当する言葉です。
It is personal and intimate. 私的で親しみを込めた呼び方です。
It embodies trust and security. その関係の本質は信頼と安心です。
“Abba,” “papa.” アバ、パパ
By believing in Jesus, God’s unique Son, you are transformed to become God’s own child yourself. 神の唯一無二の御子イエスを信じることにより、あなたは変容して神の子となります。
When you believe in Jesus, God sends His own Spirit, the Holy Spirit, into your heart. イエス様を信じると神はご自身の御霊すなわち聖霊をあなたの心に送ります。
The Holy Spirit confirms within our own hearts that we are God’s children. 聖霊は私達の心の中で私達が神の子であることを確認します。
Even though we now remain here on this earth, we enter into eternal relationship, with God Himself. いま私達はこの世に在りますがここから神ご自身との永遠の関係が始まります。
God gives us His own Spirit. 神はご自身の御霊を私たちにお与えになります。
God makes us alive by His own Spirit. 神ご自身の御霊によって私達を生かして下さります。
This is personal and intimate. これは個人的かつ親密な関係です。
It embodies trust and security. その関係の本質は信頼と安心です。
This life by the Spirit is the most satisfying thing that we as people can experience. 御霊によるこの命は人の心を最も満たしてくれるものです。
This is the “Living Water” that Jesus was offering the Samaritan woman. これこそイエス様がサマリヤの婦人に与えようとされた“生ける水”です。
Jesus is the One who gives this Living Water. イエス様こそこの生ける水を与えるお方なのです。
Jesus is the so-called prophet who leads us back to our Creator God. イエス様は私達を創造主の神のもとに導いて下さるいわゆる預言者です。
And it is through Jesus that we are able to know God, to enjoy God, and to worship God, for who He really is. そして私達はイエス様を通して真の神の姿を知り、神を享受つまり喜び、神に礼拝を捧げることが出来るのです。
So the third stage in this woman’s transition is, she learns that Jesus is the One through whom God must be worshiped. ですからイエス様と言うお方を通して神に祈りが捧げられなければならないという事を学ぶことがこの婦人の変容の第三過程です。
So, now this woman’s focus has been shifted. 今やこの婦人の焦点は別の方向に移されました。
Her attention is no longer directed to the customs and traditions of her heritage. 彼女の意識はもはや生まれながらに受け継がれてきた慣習や伝統に向けられては いません。
Her mind is on who God really is. いま彼女の心は真の神はどんなお方かということに向けられています。
She is concentrating on who God is and what God has actually promised. いま彼女は神は誰かそして本当は何を約束されたかに全力を傾けています。
She is now seeking answers in God Himself. いま彼女は神ご自身の中に答えを求めています。
She is putting her expectations in the promise that God Himself had made. 神ご自身がされた約束の中に期待を寄せています。
This woman is being transformed! この婦人はいま変容しています！ The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." 女はイエスに言った。「私はキリストと呼ばれるメシヤの来られることを知っています。その方が来られるときには、いっさいのことを私たちに知らせてくださるでしょう。」 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he." (John 4:25,26) イエスは言われた。「あなたと話しているこのわたしがそれです。」 Here, at the conclusion of this brief conversation, the woman comes to the fourth stage of her transformation. この短時間の会話の結びで婦人は自分の変容の第四過程に到達します。
This woman discovers that Jesus Himself is the One whom God had promised. この婦人はイエス様こそ神が約束された方だという事に気付きます。
"I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming.” 「私はキリストと呼ばれるメシヤの来られることを知っています。」
“Messiah” is a Hebrew word. “メシヤ”はヘブライ語です。
Christ is the same word in Greek. ギリシャ語では“キリスト”となります。
Many people think that Christ is Jesus’ family name. 多くの人がキリストはイエスの苗字だと思っています。
Mr. Christ. ミスター・キリスト
But Christ is just the Greek translation of the Hebrew word “Messiah.” しかしキリストはヘブライ語のメシヤの単なるギリシャ語訳です。
The English translation is “Savior.” 英語に訳すと“セイヴィアー”になります。
And, of course, in Japanese, it is “Sukui-nushi.” そして勿論日本語では“救い主”となります。
So, Jesus had come as this promised Savior. そうです、イエス様はこの約束された救い主としてこの世に来られました。
God, who created people, sent His Son, Jesus, to save people. 人を造られた神は彼らを救うためにひとり子イエスをこの世に遣わされました。
And through the meeting with this woman, Jesus does indeed teach us the nature of the salvation that He provides. そしてこの婦人との出会いを通して実にイエス様はご自身が与えられる救済の本質を説いておられます。
The purpose of this salvation is so that we will know God personally and intimately. この救済の目的は私たちが神を個人的にそして親しく知ることです。
It is so that we will find our deepest needs and desires satisfied in Him. また最も深く必要とするものそして望んでるものが神によって充たされることに私たちが気づくことです。
And this salvation is made possible through knowing Jesus, God’s Son. そしてこの救済は神の子イエスを知ることにより可能となります。
Jesus said to His disciple, Philip: Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father…" (John 14:9) イエスは弟子ピリポに言われた： ピリポ、こんなに長い間あなたがたといっしょにいるのに、あなたはわたしを知らなかったのですか。わたしを見た者は父を見たのです。
God’s desire is not that we spend our lives studying correct theological practices for the right place and rituals of worship. 神が私達に望んでおられるのは、然るべき場所と儀式に則って礼拝を捧げようとして正しい神学上のしきたりを研究することに私達の人生を費やすことではありません。
God’s desire for us is that we will receive His life. 神が私達に望んでおられるのは私たちが神の命を受け取ることです。
God’s desire is that we will personally and intimately experience His abundant grace. 神の望みは私たちが個人的にそして親しく神の有り余るばかりの恵に預かることです。
God’s desire is that we will be transformed by the saving power of Jesus. 神の望みはイエス様の救済の力で私たちが変容することです。
God’s desire for us is that our lives will reflect and overflow with the “Living Water,” with the Spirit of God Himself. 神が私達のために望んでおられることは 神ご自身の御霊でもって私たちの命が“生ける水”を反映しその水で溢れる事です。
This is what God created us for. これこそ神が私達人間を造られた目的です。
This is what will give our lives the deepest meaning and satisfaction. これこそ私たちの命に最も深い意味と充足感を与えるものです。
This is what will bring the greatest glory to God. これこそ神が最も喜こばれ神の栄光となるものです。
Jesus, the Savior, has come to turn our “upside down” lives “the right way up!” 救い主であるイエス様は上下さかさまになっている私達の命を正しい方向に戻すために此の世に来られたのです。
Father God, 父なる神様：
Thank you for showing us who You are. あなたの真のお姿を私達に表して下さり感謝します。
As we spend this time together in Chapel, I ask that You open each of our hearts to Yourself. 礼拝堂で共に過ごす今どうか私たち一人一人の心をあなたに向けて開かせて ください。
Please help us to know how far-reaching Your grace is, so that we will be covered by Your grace. どうか あなたの恵みはいかに遠くまで及ぶかを私たちが知りそして私たちがその恵みで包まれますように。
Please help us to experience how complete Your love is, so that we ourselves will be made complete by Your love. あなたの愛がいかに完全なものであるかを知りその愛によって私たちが完全な者となれますように。
Please help us to see how pure You are, so that we will receive Your purity into ourselves. あなたがいかに清廉であるかを知りその清さを私たちの中に受け入れることが出来ますように。
Please transform our hearts by the power of Your Spirit, so that our lives will overflow with the power of Your Living Water. どうかあなたのみ霊の力で私たちの心を変えてください、そして私達の命が あなたの生ける水の力で溢れますように。
Father God, please fill our hearts with the joy of personally knowing Jesus. 父なる神様、どうかイエス様を親しく知る喜びで私達の心を満たしてください。 We ask this for Your glory’s sake. あなたの栄光を讃えます。
