John 15:5,6 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. ヨハネ１５」章５節〜６節 わたしはぶどうの木で、あなたがたは枝です。人がわたしにとどまり、わたしもその人の中にとどまっているなら、そういう人は多くの実を結びます。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何もすることができないからです。 だれでも、もしわたしにとどまっていなければ、枝のように投げ捨てられて、枯れます。人々はそれを寄せ集めて火に投げ込むので、それは燃えてしまいます。
I am sure that you have all noticed these flowers here today. 今日、ここに花があることにお気づきだと思います。
They look so beautiful. とても美しく見えます。
And they smell wonderful. そしてすばらしい香りがします。
Flowers can make a dark place bright. 花は暗い場所を輝かせることができます。
And their fragrance can fill the whole room with fresh air. そして花の香りは新しい空気で部屋を満たすことができるのです。
Just look at these flowers. この花を見てください。
They are beautiful! 美しいですね！
There is something about flowers that uplifts your heart. 花には心をウキウキさせるものがあります。
Their freshness and fragrance makes you feel alive. 花のさわやかさと香りは、生き生きとさせます。
But here is my question… では、ここで質問をします。
Are these flowers alive? この花は生きているのでしょうか？
Well, they look fantastic! この花は素敵に見えます！
They are so colorful. とても色彩豊かです！
They smell great. とても素敵な香りがします。
So they must be alive, right? だからこの花は生きているのでしょうか？
Can you imagine these flowers boasting about their situation? この花たちがその美しさを自慢していると想像してみてください。
“Look at me. Aren’t I beautiful!” 「私を見て！きれいでしょ？」
“Everyone admires my petals!” 「みんな私の花びらに見とれているわ！」
“Ohhh, you smell absolutely gorgeous, darling!” 「お～ぉ、君の香りは本当にすばらしい！」
“Don’t you think my blooms are a work of art?!” 「私って芸術品だと思わない？」
“We really make this room look so good!” 「私たちはこの部屋をとても美しくしているでしょう？」
But what about in one week time week? しかし、一週間後はどうなっているでしょう？
What will they be like then? そのころ、この花はどうなっているでしょう？
They will have withered. この花はしおれてしまっているでしょう。
They will have lost their color and their fragrance. 色も香りも失ってしまっているでしょう。
In fact, they will probably be dead. たぶん枯れているでしょう。
And if that is the case, then they will no doubt have already been thrown away. そうなったら、まちがいなくこの花はもう捨てられているでしょう。
What will happen to their boasting then? そうなったら、花の誇るものはどうなるでしょう？
“But why will these flowers die?” I hear you ask. 「でもこの花はなぜ死んでしまうのでしょう？」と、みなさんの声が聞こえてきます」
Good question! I’m very glad you asked. ありがとうございます。それはとてもいい質問です。 It’s because, of course, they don’t have any roots. なぜなら、この花には根っこがないからです。
The flowers have been cut off from their roots. この花は根っこから切りとられました。
They have been separated from the roots. この花は根っこから切り離されました。
They are not attached to the roots. この花は根っこにつながっていません。
I looked up the word “root” in the dictionary. 私は辞書で『根っこ』という言葉を調べておきました。
The explanation included the following words: 『根っこ』には、次のような言葉が含まれます。
“origin, source, cause, basis, starting place and core.” 起源、根源、原因、基礎、スタート地点、核
So, the root of a plant is absolutely essential to its existence. だから、植物の根っこはその存在のために必要不可欠なものです。
The roots are the source of life of a plant. 根っこは植物の命の源なのです。
They provide the plant with water and nutrition. 根っこは植物に水と栄養を与えます。
They are the core of its life. 根っこは植物の命の核なのです。
So, as long as the plant is attached to the roots, the plant can receive the water and nutrition that it needs to survive. だから、植物は根っこにつながっている限り、生きるために必要な水や栄養を受け取ることができます。 And, what is more, the roots also physically support the plant. さらに、根っこは植物の身体も支えています。
When the wind blows, and when the rain pours down, the roots stop the plant from being washed away. 風が吹いたとき、雨が激しく降るとき、根っこは植物が倒れないように支えます。
The roots keep the plant upright. 根っこは植物をまっすぐな状態に保ちます。
So, a plant is only able to bloom and be beautiful because of the roots that support it. 植物は花を咲かせることができ、美しい姿でいられるのは、ただ根っこが支えてくれるからです。
However, there is an interesting thing about roots. ところで、根っこにはおもしろいところがあります。
They are hidden from sight. 根っこは私たちの視界から見えないところにあります。
You can’t see them. 根っこは見えません。
In fact, when you look at a flower, you don’t even think about its roots. そういえば、花を見るとき、その根っこについてなど、考えもしません。
The flower is the focus of our attention. 私たちの関心は花に集中します。
But the flower can only be there because of its roots. しかし、花は根っこがあるからそこに存在できるのです。
The life of the flower originates with the roots. 花の命は根っこにあります。
And those very same roots continue to support and provide life for the flower… その根っこは、花のためにその体を支え、命を与え続けます。
even though you can’t see them. たとえその姿が見えなくても・・・。
So, what about these flowers? では、この花についてはどうでしょう？
They look really beautiful. 本当に美しく見えます。 They smell great. とても良い香りがします。
They certainly look like they are alive. この花は確かにまだ生きているように見えます。
But the reality is that they are being artificially supported. しかし、現実には、この花は人工的に支えられています。
The walls of the vase prop the flowers up nice and straight. 花瓶のかべは、花を見た目のいいように、まっすぐにもたせかけます。
And the water in the vase prevents them from immediately wilting. そして、花瓶の水は花がすぐにしおれてしまうことを防ぎます。
They look nice. この花はきれいに見えます。
No, they look great. いいえ、花はすばらしいです。
But it is only because of the artificial support. しかし、それは人工的な支えによるからです。
So, the flowers are alive. だから、この花は生きているのでしょう。
But the reality is that the flowers have been cut off from their roots. しかし、現実には、花は根っこから切り離されています。
They have been cut off from the source of their life. 命の源から切り離されています。
Ok then, let me ask another question. では、（私に）もうひとつ質問させてください。
Are these flowers living things? この花は生きるものですか？
Well, if we just think about them one way, yes, we must say that they ARE living things. （ある見方では）一つの方向から見たら、そうです！この花は生きているものだというべきです
If we compare these flowers to, say, the piano, then it is clear that the piano is not a living thing; この花を例えばピアノと比べたら、それは明らかです。ピアノは生きているものではありません。
But the flowers are. 花は生きています。
However, let’s think about what is happening to these flowers. しかし、この花の本当の状態について考えてみましょう。
Yesterday, someone picked them and put them in this vase. 昨日、誰かがこの花を摘み取り、この花瓶に活けました。
Today, they still look and smell so fresh. 今日、この花はまだ香りがよく、イキイキしているように見えます。
So, on the one hand, these flowers are certainly not dead yet. 一方では、この花はたしかにまだ死んではいません。
They are still alive. この花はまだ生きています。
They seem like they are living things. 生きているように見えます。
On the other hand, however, in which direction are they heading? しかし、結局、この花はどちらの方向に向かっているのでしょうか？
In other words, are they heading towards having life? つまり、命（生）を持つものでしょうか？
Or, are they heading towards death? それとも、もう死に向かうものでしょうか？
Are they living beings, or are they dying things? 生きるものか、死ぬものか？
If they were connected to their source of life, they would be continually receiving new life. 命の源とつながっていたら、この花は新しい命を受け続けるでしょう。 So they would be living things. それでしたら、この花は生きるものになります。
But if they are cut off from their roots; でも、この花が根っこと切り離されていたら、
if they are separated from the source of their life, then, they are heading towards death. もし、命の源から切り離されていたら、この花は死に向かうものに分類されます。
They are dying things この花は死ぬものです。
In fact, although they look like they are alive, in reality, we could say that they are already actually dead. 花は生きているように見えても、本当はもうすでに死んでいると言えるでしょう。
Their fate is already sealed. 彼らの運命がもう定められている。
Sadly, the beauty and strength of these flowers are only superficial. 悲しいことに、この花の美しさと力は表面的なものです。
They are not lasting. それは続きません。
Because the flowers are not attached to their roots, they will all be lost in death. 花はその根っこにつながっていないので、やがて死によって全てが失われます。
Interestingly, Jesus describes Himself as a vine. おもしろいことに、イエス様はご自身のことをブドウの木と表現されました。
In fact, He calls Himself the “true vine,” and His Father God is the gardener. イエス様はご自身を『真の葡萄の木』、そして天の父を農夫とおっしゃいました。
And then He continues: そして、このように続けておっしゃいます。
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. わたしはぶどうの木で、あなたがたは枝です。人がわたしにとどまり、わたしもその人の中にとどまっているなら、そういう人は多くの実を結びます。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何もすることができないからです。
If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. (John 15:5,6) だれでも、もしわたしにとどまっていなければ、枝のよう(１)に投げ捨てられて、枯れます。人々はそれを寄せ集めて火に投げ込むので、それは燃えてしまいます。（ヨハネ１５章５節〜６節）
In other words, Jesus is saying that we are like plants. つまり、イエス様は私たちが植物のようなものだと言っていらっしゃいます。
We are like these flowers. 私たちはこの花のようです。
Jesus is the Vine. イエス様は『葡萄の木』です。
He is the root. イエス様は根っこなのです。
Jesus is the source of life. イエス様は命の源です。
The reason for life. 命の理由です。
Jesus is the core of life. イエス様は命の核です。
And the Lord God is the gardener. そして、天の御父は農夫です。
God treats us according to our relationship with Jesus. 神様は私たちのイエス様との関係に応じて取り扱うのです。
If we are connected to Jesus, He prunes us so that we will bear rich fruit in our lives. 私たちがイエス様とつながっているなら、神様は私たちの人生に豊かな実りが結ばれるように私たちを刈り込まれます。
But if we are not attached, we will not bear fruit; しかし、もし私たちがイエス様とつながっていないなら、私たちは実りを結ばれることがありません。
and in the end, we will be cut off and burned. そして、ついには、取り除かれ、燃やされてしまうでしょう。
It is a severe picture. それは悲惨な状況です。
Because the Bible teaches us that the source of our life is God; 聖書が教えているのは、私たちの命の源は神様です。
but we are born separated from God しかし、同時に、私たちは神様から切り離された状態で生まれます。
we are cut off from the source of life from the beginning. 私たちは、最初から、命の源から切り離されています。
It’s not that we are born in a relationship with God and then lose it. 私たちは神様との関係の中で生まれますが、その関係を途中で失うわけではありません。
It’s not that we are good, and then we do something bad and get cut off from God. 私たちは最初から良い人で、そして、何か悪いことをしたからといって神様から切り離されてしまうということではありません。
The central teaching of the Bible is not that bad people need to become good people. 聖書の中心となる教えは、悪い人が良い人にならなければいけないというものではありません。
The problem that the Bible focuses on not even that we should not be a bother to other people. 聖書が重点的に取り扱う問題は私たちは他人に迷惑をかけないようにということでもない。
Let me say this again please. The focus of the Bible is not that bad people need to become good people. もう一度言わせてください。聖書の中心は悪い人が良い人にならなければいけないというものではありません。
The focus of the Bible is that dead people need to become living people. 聖書の中心は死んだ人が生きる人になることが必要だということです。
People separated from the source of life need to become connected to the source of life! 命の源から離れてしまった人々は命の源につながることが必要なのです。
So, according to the Bible, our main problem in life is not about being good or bad; だから、聖書には私たちの命において大切な問題は良い人でいるか、そうではないかということではありません。
The problem that we are confronted with is about being connected with God or separated from God; 私たちが直面する問題は神様とつながっているか、神様から離れているか、という問題です。
It is about being alive or dead; それは生きているものか、死んでいるものかということです。
That’s what Christmas is about. クリスマスの意味はそこにあります。 That is why God entered into His own creation. そのために、神様はご自身がつくられたこの世界の中に入ってきたのです。 Jesus came to give life. イエス様は命を与えるために来てくださいました。
The Bible teaches us that God created us in His own image. 聖書は神様がご自身の姿に似せて私たちを創造したと教えています。
God created us to be like flowers. 神様は花のように私たちを造られました。
To bloom. 咲き誇るために。
To give off a beautiful fragrance. 美しい香りを発するために。
God created us as a work of art! 神様は私たちを芸術作品として造られました。
God made us to reflect His glory. 神様は私たちを神様の栄光を表すために造られました。
And because we are made in God’s image, we are created with eternal life. 私たちは神様の姿に似せて造られたので、私たちは永遠の命を持って創造されています。
But the Bible teaches us that when we are born, we do not have relationship with God. しかし、私たちは生まれながらにして神様との関係を持っていないと聖書は教えています。
We are not connected to the source of life. 私たちは命の源につながっていません。
Our bodies are alive. 私たちのからだは生きています。
But even from the time we are born, our bodies are heading down a one way street towards physical death. しかし私たちは生まれた瞬間からでさえ、私たちの体は肉体的な死への一本道へと進んでいきます。
We are dying beings. 私たちは死ぬものです。
Our fate is sealed. 私たちの運命は定められている。
But God loves us. しかし、神様は私たちを愛しています。
God loves you. 神様はあなたを愛しています。
He loves you so much that He doesn’t want you to remain eternally cut off. 神様はあなたをとても愛しているので、神様との関係が永遠に断ち切られたままでいてほしくないのです。
He doesn’t want you to be thrown onto the fire like a dead plant. 神様はあなたが枯草のように燃える炎に投げ入れられてほしくはありません。
God wants you to be attached to the vine. 神様はあなたにぶどうの木につながってほしいと望んでいらっしゃいます。
He wants you to receive life. 神様はあなたに命を受け取ってほしいと望んでいらっしゃいます。
To be a living thing. 生きるものになるためです。
God is glory. 神様は栄光です。
God wants us to experience His glory in our own lives. 神様は私たちに人生において神様の栄光を感じて欲しいと望んでいらっしゃいます。
That’s what Christmas is about. それがクリスマスです。
That is why Jesus came into this world. イエス様がこの世界に来てくださったのはそのためでした。
Jesus came to give us God’s own love, peace, hope and joy. イエス様は神様ご自身の愛、平和、希望、喜びを私たちに与えるために来てくださいました。
Jesus’ Christmas present to us is the gift of God’s own life. イエス様の私たちへのクリスマスプレゼントは神様ご自身の命です。
Jesus came to call us to God as His eternal family. イエス様は神様の永遠の家族として私たちを神様のもとへ導くために来てくださいました。
Jesus came so that we might live and bloom with God’s eternal glory. イエス様は私たちが神様の永遠の栄光を持って輝いて生きるために来てくださいました。
