Mark 4:35-41 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" マルコ４章３５節〜４１節 さて、その日のこと、夕方になって、イエスは弟子たちに、「さあ、向こう岸へ渡ろう」と言われた。 そこで弟子たちは、群衆をあとに残し、舟に乗っておられるままで、イエスをお連れした。他の舟もイエスについて行った。 すると、激しい突風が起こり、舟は波をかぶって、水でいっぱいになった。 ところがイエスだけは、とものほうで、枕をして眠っておられた。弟子たちはイエスを起こして言った。「先生。私たちがおぼれて死にそうでも、何とも思われないのですか。」 イエスは起き上がって、風をしかりつけ、湖に「黙れ、静まれ」と言われた。すると風はやみ、大なぎになった。 イエスは彼らに言われた。「どうしてそんなにこわがるのです。信仰がないのは、どうしたことです。」 彼らは大きな恐怖に包まれて、互いに言った。「風や湖までが言うことをきくとは、いったいこの方はどういう方なのだろう。」
It’s great to see everyone here again. また皆さんにお会いできてとても嬉しいです。
I hope that you have all had a great Christmas and new year. 皆さん良いクリスマスとお正月を過ごされたことと思います。
We had a wonderful time visiting my relatives in England. 私は家族でイギリスの親戚の所へ行って来ました、とても良い時間でした。
We travelled up and down the country catching up with family. 親戚に会うために、イギリスのあちらこちらへ行きました。
We saw many old, historic places. 古い、歴史的な場所もたくさん訪れました。
We met all my relatives. 親戚全部に会って来ました。
And we almost met someone else. そしてこんな人にも会えたっていうか…
One of my cousins actually lives in a house that is more that 500 years old! いとこのひとりは、なんと築500年以上の家に住んでいます。
It gave us a real sense of security and stability. その家に居ると安心と安全を実感しました。
But one of the more memorable things for us happened in an everyday living room. ですが、私達にとってより忘れられないことのひとつが、どこにでもあるようなリビングルームで起きました。
We were having dinner at another cousin’s house. 別のいとこの家で夕食をとっていました。
They had a cat, and they had a piano. そのうちには猫が居て、ピアノがありました。
No, the cat couldn’t play the piano. もちろん、猫にはピアノは弾けませんでしたが。
But it was sitting right next to the piano. ピアノのすぐそばに座っていました。
In fact, as we ate our meal, the cat sat motionless, looking, staring at the small space under the piano. 実際、私達が食事をしている間、その猫はピアノの下のせまい場所を見つめて、じっと座っていました。
You see, (それは/なぜなら)my cousin lived in the countryside; それは、いとこが田舎に住んでいたからです、
and the cat had actually brought in a mouse to play with from the fields outside. そしてその猫は、外の原っぱから、遊ぶためにネズミを取って来ていたんです。
A real, live mouse! 本物の、生きているネズミです。
The mouse had escaped and was hiding under the piano; そのネズミが逃げてピアノの下に隠れていたので、
so the cat was watching, waiting for the mouse to come out. 猫はネズミが出て来ないかと見張っていたのです。
Being a country house, this sort of thing seemed to be normal for that family. 田舎の家なので、こういったことはその家族にとっては当たり前のようでした。
But, can you imagine how the mouse must have felt? ですが、そのネズミがどう感じていたか想像できるでしょうか？
It had been outside, minding its own business. ネズミは、誰にも迷惑をかけずに外に居ただけなのに、
Then, all of a sudden, it was grabbed and dragged away by a cat. 突然、捕まって、引っ張って行かれてしまったのです、猫に。
At first, the cat had teased the mouse. まず、猫はネズミをおもちゃにしました。
It had tossed it around with its paws; 前足でめちゃくちゃにいじってみたり、
It had held it in its mouth and shaken it. 口にくわえてふりまわしたりしました。
Then, even though the mouse had managed to escape and hide, the cat had continued to wait for it. それから、ネズミはなんとかして逃げて隠れようとしましたが、猫はネズミをずっと待っていました。
As soon as the mouse would try to run away, the cat was waiting there to pounce again. ネズミが逃げようとしたらすぐにもう一度飛びかかってやろうと、猫は待っていました。
So, the mouse had no where to escape to; but neither could it stay where it was. それで、ネズミは逃げる所もなく、そこにじっとしていることもできませんでした。
There was certainly no stability or security for that mouse there! そのネズミにとって、そこには安心や安全はありませんでした。
Maybe you have found yourself in this kind of situation before. このような状況に陥ってしまったことが皆さんにもあるのではないでしょうか。
There has been some kind of trouble; 何らかのトラブルがあって
you have felt cornered, under attack, and absolutely helpless to escape. 窮地に追い込まれ、攻撃され、逃げる術もない、と感じたことが。
What do you do when this happens? こういうことが起きたら、あなたならどうしますか？
What do you do when you are under stress, when things don’t go as you expect, when you feel like you are being attacked?(８ページ目の下の部分も同上) ストレスにさらされた時、物事が期待通りに行かない時、まるで攻撃されているかのように感じた時、あなたは何をしますか？ How do you respond when you feel surrounded and overwhelmed by doubt , by sorrow, by fear , or by guilt? 疑いや、悲しみ、恐れ、罪の意識に囲まれて、自分が壊れてしまいそうな時、あなたはどう反応しますか？
This is what had happened to Jesus’ disciples one day. これは、ある日イエス様の弟子達に起こったことです。
Everything was going smoothly at first. 最初はなにもかもうまく行っていました。
They were in a boat, minding their own business. 彼らは当たり前のように、ボートに乗っていました、。
It was smooth sailing (順調だという意味！) ボートは順調に進んで行きました。 Then, without warning, a violent storm began to lash them. すると、何の前触れもなく、ひどい嵐が彼らを襲いました。
The wind beat their faces and their boat was tossed around by the waves. 風が顔をたたき、ボートは波にもてあそばれました。
They were in real danger of sinking. 今にも沈みそうでした。
They were under attack, and they had nowhere to hide. 嵐に襲われて、隠れる所はありませんでした。
They seemed to have had their stability and security completely torn away from them! 安心も安全も完全に奪われてしまったようでした。
When we are in these kinds of situations, we often feel like we are all alone. 私達はこのような状況に陥るとよく、全くのひとりぼっちだと感じてしまいます。
Even if there are other people around us, they seem distant. たとえ人が周りに居たとしても、とても距離があるように感じます。
We think: “No one understands me; こんな風に思います「誰も分かってくれない」
they don’t even care!” 「心配してもくれない」と。
And, there is nowhere to hide; そして隠れる所はありません
nowhere to escape to. 逃げる所もありません。
That’s how Jesus’ disciples felt. イエス様の弟子達もそう（同じように）感じました。
As that sudden storm raged on, they became overwhelmed by their feelings of helplessness and fear. その嵐が荒れ狂うに連れて、弟子達は無力感と恐怖で壊れてしまいそうになりました。
They felt all alone. 見捨てられてしまった、と感じました。
But they were not. でもそうではありませんでした。
There was someone else there in the boat with them. ボートの中には、彼らと一緒にまだ誰かいました。
It was Jesus Himself! イエス様です！
But He was sleeping. でもイエス様は寝ていました。
In spite of the storm that raged around them, Jesus’ eyes seemed to be closed to their problem. 嵐が荒れ狂っていたにもかかわらず、イエス様の目は弟子達の問題に対しては閉じられていたようでした。
And so the disciples woke Jesus and actually rebuked Him. それで弟子達はイエス様を起こしました、いえむしろ、イエス様を非難しました。
Let’s read how Mark described the situation again: マルコがこの状況をどう記しているかもう一度読んでみましょう。
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. すると、激しい突風が起こり、舟は波をかぶって水でいっぱいになった。
Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" (Mark 4:37, 38)
I think that there might have been some feelings of confusion, disappointment, and even consternation mixed in with the disciples’ feelings of fear. 弟子達の恐怖感には、困惑や失望や腹立ちといったような感情すら入り混じっていったのではないでしょうか、
They were literally being swamped. 彼らはすっかり、波をかぶってしまっていました。
But Jesus didn’t seem to notice their problem. でもイエス様は弟子達の問題には気付いていないようでした。
Did He understand what was happening? イエス様にはなにが起きていたのか分かっていたのでしょうか。
Did He even care? イエス様にはそんなことどうでも良かったんでしょうか？
The more the disciples looked at their problem, the more it seemed to them that they had been abandoned. 弟子達は自分達の問題について一生懸命になればなるほど、見捨てられたような気がしていきました。
Jesus was there; イエス様はそこにいました
but if He was really with them, why were they in such trouble? でもイエス様が本当に一緒にいてくれたのなら、弟子達はなぜこんな問題に見舞われたのでしょう。
Their question is also our question. 彼らの疑問は私達の疑問でもあります。
Where is God in our trouble. 私達が大変な思いをしている時、神様はどこに居るんでしょう 。
In order to find the answer, we need to look back at what happened immediately before the disciples got into the boat. 答えを見つけるために、弟子達がボートに乗り込む直前に起きたことを振り返っておく必要があります。
Jesus had been teaching His disciples. イエス様が弟子達に教えておられました。
The focus of His teaching was about putting their trust, their absolute trust, in Him. イエス様に信頼すること、完全に信頼すること、というのがその教えの中心でした。
Jesus had actually just taught His disciples the parable of the four seeds. 実際に話しておられたのは4つの種のたとえ話でした、それを弟子たちに話されたところでした。
He pointed out that some people become interested in Jesus, and even believe in Him; こう示されました。イエス様に興味を持つ人や、いったんは信じてみるという人もいます、
but even though they come to know about Him, they don’t actually really know Him personally. また、イエス様について知識は得たとしても、イエス様を本当には理解できていないという人もいます。
They don’t understand(!) who Jesus really is. 彼らはイエス様が本当はどんな方か分かっていないのです。
And so they don’t put their absolute trust in Him. なので、イエス様を完全に信頼してはいません。
Instead, they focus their attention on their own problems; 代わりに、自分達自身の問題に気持ちが向いてしまったり
and they become distracted by the things that interest them. 興味のあることに心が奪われてしまいます。
Things that are, in the end, only temporary. それらは結局、一時的な物です。
But the result is that these people don’t know (!) Jesus. 結果として、こういう人達にはイエス様のことが分からない、ということになります。
And because they don’t know Him, they don’t put their absolute trust in Him そして、彼らはイエス様のことが分かっていないので、イエス様を信頼しきることができません。
This was indeed the problem with the disciples. これこそが弟子達の問題でした。
We would think that they completely trusted Jesus. 弟子達はイエス様に完全に信頼していたんだろうと普通思いますよね。
They had followed Him everywhere, they had listened to Him preach, and they had watched His miracles. 彼らはどこでもイエス様に付いて行っていましたし、その説教を聞いていましたし、その奇跡を見てもいました。
You would think that they would have really known(!) Jesus. だから、彼らは本当にイエス様を分かっていた筈、と思われることでしょう。
But, look at their response to their situation. ですが、この状況での彼らの反応を見てください。
"Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
先生。私たちがおぼれて死にそうでも、何とも思われないのですか。
If it had been anyone other than Jesus, their response would have been understandable, even acceptable. そこに居たのがイエス様以外の誰かだったとしたら、彼らの反応は理解できますし、受け入れることもできます。
After all, the storm was real. 本当に嵐でしたから。
Their danger seemed real. 危険なのも本当でした。
And their fear was real. 彼らの恐怖も本当でした。
What could anyone do in that situation? この状況で、誰かに何かできたでしょうか？
But this was Jesus. でもそこにいたのはイエス様でした。
Let’s look at what He did. なにをされたか見てみましょう。
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. (Mark 4:39)
He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" (Mark 4:40)
イエスは彼らに言われた。「どうしてそんなにこわがるのです。信仰がないのは、どうしたことです。」
The storm wasn’t a problem for Jesus – He had been asleep in the boat. イエス様にとって、嵐は問題ではありませんでした－ボートの中で寝ていたぐらいですから。
And without any bother at all, the creator of nature commanded the storm to stop. それから、イエス様はこの自然を創られた方なので、なんでもないことのように、嵐に止まれと命令されました。
And it did! そしてそうなりました！
The problem here was not that there was a problem! 問題が起こること自体が問題なのではありません。
The storm itself is not the focus of what is happening here. 嵐自体は、ここで起きたことの中心ではありません。
In life, storms do happen! 人生には、嵐がつきものです。
Sometimes we see them coming; sometimes they take us by surprise. やってくるのがわかる時もあれば、突然やってきて驚くこともあります。
But here is where the disciples had gone wrong. ですが、ここで弟子達は間違ってしまいました。
The storm had aroused feelings of fear within them. 嵐は弟子達に恐れを引き起こしました。
But it wasn’t their fear itself that Jesus challenged. でも、イエス様は、彼らが恐れたこと自体を責めたのではありません。
Jesus was not criticizing them for being afraid. 怖がったからといって彼らを非難した訳ではありません。
That would be totally normal in their situation. 彼らの状況では至って普通のことだったでしょう。
The problem is how they responded in their fear. 恐れの中で彼らがどうしたかということが問題なのです。
Their problem was that their total focus had suddenly become directed on the storm. 彼らの問題は、その時嵐のことしか考えられなくなってしまった、ということでした。
Because of that, their thinking became controlled by their feelings. そのことによって、考えが感情に支配されるようになってしまいました。
And because of that, and so they stopped trusting in Jesus. そのため、彼らはイエス様への信頼を失ってしまいました。
So Jesus challenged them: “Why are you so (!) afraid? Do you still have no faith?” それでイエス様は彼らに訴えました「どうしてそんなにこわがるのです。信仰がないのは、どうしたことです。」 It was not that the disciples didn’t think that Jesus could save them from the storm. 弟子達が、イエス様には嵐から自分達を助けられないと思っていた訳ではありません。
Their charge against Jesus was not about His ability to help. イエス様には自分達を助ける力が無いといって責めたわけでもありません。
They had expected Jesus to help them. 弟子達は、イエス様なら助けてくれると思っていました。
That expectation was based on Jesus’ ability. イエス様にはその力があるので、そう期待したのです。
So from that perspective, it was a correct expectation. そう考えると、正しい期待だったということになります。
But at the same time, the disciples’ trust of Jesus had been limited. ですが同時に、弟子達のイエス様に対する信頼には欠けている所がありました。
Their trust was limited to how they thought Jesus should help them. 自分達の思うような方法で助けて欲しい、と思ってしまった所や
Their trust was limited to when they thought Jesus should help them. 自分達の思うようなタイミングで助けて欲しい、と思ってしまった所です。
But friends, that is not trust. ですが愛する皆さん、これでは信頼ではありません。
That is an expectation of obligation. してもらって当然、という態度です。
The disciples’ reaction was as though they thought it was Jesus’ duty to help them. 弟子達の反応はまるで、彼らを助けるのはイエス様の義務である、と思っているかのようでした。
Their approach to Jesus was based on how they felt, not on who He really is! 彼らはイエス様に対する態度を、イエス様が本当はどういう方なのかによって決めたのではなく、自分達の感情によって決めたのです。
That is why, when they were filled with fear, they accused Him of not caring about them. そのため、恐怖でいっぱいになってしまった時、イエス様は自分達のことをなんとも思ってくれなかったといって非難したのです。 They were being controlled by their feelings. 彼らは感情に支配されていました。
Those feelings of fear had stolen away their understanding of who Jesus really is. 恐れという感情のせいで、イエス様は本当はどういう方なのか、ということが分からなくなってしまいました。
They knew about Jesus. 彼らはイエス様について知識はありました。
They knew that He could help. 自分達を助けることができる、と知ってはいました。
But they had lost their faith in His character. ですが彼らはイエス様の心を信じられなくなっていました。
Even though they knew that He could save them, they thought Jesus was unmoved, unconcerned by their problem. イエス様は自分達を助けることができると知ってはいましたが、イエス様は自分達の問題に関心なんか無いんだと思ってしまっていました。
They thought that if He cared, instead of sleeping, surely He would have already done something to help them. もしイエス様が自分達のことに関心があるなら、眠ったりしていないで、自分達を助けるために何かしてくれていた筈だ、と考えました。
They had stopped trusting Him. それで、イエス様を信じることをやめてしまいました。
They suddenly doubted Jesus’ love for them. そこで、イエス様の愛を疑うようになりました。
They didn’t even think that He cared about them. イエス様は自分達のことを大切に思ってなどいないとさえ、考えてしまいました。
And so Jesus’ challenged them: だからイエス様は彼らに訴えたのです、
"Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 「どうしてそんなにこわがるのです。信仰がないのは、どうしたことです。」
What do you do when you are under stress, when things don’t go as you expect, when you feel like you are being attacked? ストレスを受け、物事が期待通りに行かず、まるで何かに攻撃されているようだと感じるとき、あなたはどうしますか？
How do you respond when you feel surrounded and overwhelmed by doubt, by sorrow, by fear, or by guilt? 疑いや悲しみ、恐れや罪の意識に過去まれて、自分が壊れそうな時、あなたはどうしますか？
There are storms in life. 人生には嵐がつきものです。
And more than likely, those storms will continue to rage around you. そして嵐は、あなたの周りで荒れ狂うのをやめないでしょう。
That’s because, to be honest, there are so many things in life that are beyond our control. 正直な所、人生には自分ではどうにもならないことがたくさんあるからです。
We can’t change the circumstances, and we can’t change the people around us. 私達には周りの状況を変えることはできませんし、周りの人達を変えることもできません。
That’s because those things are on the outside. そういった事は外側のことだからです。
But we ourselves can be changed. ですが私達自身は変わることができます。
We can be transformed, renewed on the inside. 私達の内側は、変えられ、新しくされることができます。
We can experience stability and security within the raging storm. 私達は荒れ狂う嵐の中でも安心と安全を経験することができます。
How? どうやってでしょうか？
Let’s look again at what Jesus did: イエス様が何をしたのかもう一度見てみましょう。
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. (Mark 4:39) イエスは起き上がって、風をしかりつけ、湖に「黙れ、静まれ」と言われた。すると風はやみ、大なぎになった。
And, how did the disciples respond to Jesus? そして弟子達はイエス様にどう反応したでしょう？
They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" (Mark 4:41) 彼らは大きな恐怖に包まれて、互いに言った。「風や湖までが言うことをきくとは、いったいこの方はどういう方なのだろう。」
It’s a bit ironic, really. なんかちょっと変な感じじゃないですか。
First, the disciples were afraid of the storm, and they criticized Jesus because He hadn’t already helped them. 最初、弟子達は嵐を恐れていました、そして助けてくれないと言って、イエス様のことを責めていました。
But then, when He did help them - when Jesus calmed the storm - they became even more terrified! ですがその後、イエス様が助けてくれた時－嵐を鎮めてくださった時－弟子達はもっと怖くなってしまったんです。
But the disciples had to come face to face with the true Jesus. ですが弟子達は、イエス様の本当の姿と向き合わなくてはいけませんでした。
In order to really trust Jesus, the disciples needed to know without any doubt who Jesus really is. イエス様を本当に信頼するためには、弟子達はイエス様が本当は誰なのかということをちゃんと知る必要がありました。
It was right that the disciples had felt fear. 弟子達が恐怖を感じたのは正しいことでした。
They had a problem that they could not overcome. 彼らは自分達ではどうしようもできない問題を抱えていました。
But Jesus wanted the disciples to bring their fears to Him; ですがイエス様は弟子達にその恐れをご自分に任せて欲しいと思っていました。
to trust Him in their fears. 恐れのあるままでいいからイエス様に信頼して欲しいと、
To trust Him because of their fears. 恐れがあるからこそ、イエス様を信じて欲しい、と。
But they would only be able to trust Jesus if they understood that He not only had the ability to help them, but that it was His absolute desire and joy to help them. イエス様は彼らを助ける力を持っているだけではなくて、彼らを助けることが本当にイエス様の望みであり喜びなのだと知って初めて、弟子達はイエス様を信頼することができたでしょう。
As we start this new year together, I want to confirm now that, in the same way, Jesus wants us to know that we are not alone. 年の初めにあたって、今そのことを確認しておきたいと思います、イエス様は私達にも、見捨てられていないことを知っておいて欲しいと思っています。
Jesus is also with us. イエス様は私達とも一緒にいてくださいます。
And Jesus wants so much for us to take our fears to Him. そしてイエス様は同様に私達にも、自分達の恐れをイエス様に任せて欲しいと思っています。
The disciple Peter later came to understand this, and so he now tells us: 弟子のペテロはやがてこのことが分かるようになったので、私達にすすめています、
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7) あなたがたの思い煩いを、いっさい神にゆだねなさい。神があなたがたのことを心配してくださるからです。
That’s because Jesus is the One who can calm the storms of our lives. イエス様は私達の人生の嵐を静めることができる唯1人の方だからです。
In fact, He can give us peace, security and stability in the midst of those storms. 事実、そのような嵐のただなかにあって、イエス様が私達に平安と安全と安心を与えてくださいます。
We too can absolutely depend on Jesus because Jesus is absolutely faithful. 私達もまた完全にイエス様に信頼することができます、イエス様が完全に信頼できる方だからです。
Jesus concluded teaching His parable of the four soils by explaining that the people who do trust Him come to know Him personally for who He really is. 4つの種のたとえ話の最後にイエス様はこう話されました、イエス様を本当に信頼する人達は、イエス様が本当はどんな方なのかを自分のこととして知るようになる、と。
And they begin to experience life through Jesus. そういう人達はイエス様を通して人生を経験するようになります。
They become transformed from within to live above the problems that surround them, and free from the emotions that previously controlled them. 自分の心が変えられ、以前彼らを支配していた周囲の問題や自分の感情から自由にされます。
That’s why Paul encourages us: それで、パウロが私達にすすめているのです。
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 何も思い煩わないで、あらゆる場合に、感謝をもってささげる祈りと願いによって、あなたがたの願い事を神に知っていただきなさい。
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6,7) そうすれば、人のすべての考えにまさる神の平安が、あなたがたの心と思いをキリスト・イエスにあって守ってくれます。
There will always be things in life that we cannot overcome in our own strength. 自分の力ではどうしようもできないようなことが、人生にはいつもあります。
But when you really know Jesus, でもあなたが本当にイエス様のことを知る時、
even if you do experience fear, たとえ恐れを経験したとしても
you will not be controlled by that fear. その恐れに支配されることはありません。
During our chapel this year, I want to continue to look together at who Jesus really is; 今年のバイリンガルチャペルでは、イエス様は本当はどんな方なのか、ということについて一緒に見ていきたいと思っています。
I want to learn together why we can really trust Him; 私達が本当にイエス様を信頼できるのはなぜか、についても一緒に学んで行きたいです。
and I want to experience together Jesus’ security and stability in our own hearts. そして私達の心の中にある、イエス様から来る安全と安心を一緒に体験したいです。
Let’s pray. お祈りします。
Father God, 天のお父様、
Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed by the problems of life. 私たちは人生の問題によって、壊れてしまいそうに感じることがあります。
Sometimes we feel alone, isolated, and helpless. だれからも見捨てられ、誰もそばにいてくれなくて、誰も助けてくれない、と感じることがあります。
But I thank you that we are not alone, and we are not without help. でも本当は見捨てられてなんかいないし、ちゃんと助けてもらえることを感謝します。
Indeed, You have promised that you will never leave us or forsake us. 確かにあなたは、絶対に私達を置いていかないし見捨てない、と約束してくださいました。
You can calm the storms in our hearts; あなたは私達の心の中の嵐を静めることができます
