John 15:1,2,5,6,8 1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. ヨハネ１５章１、2、5、6、８節 1 わたしはまことのぶどうの木であり、わたしの父は農夫です。 2 わたしの枝で実を結ばないものはみな、父がそれを取り除き、実を結ぶものはみな、もっと多く実を結ぶために、刈り込みをなさいます。 5 わたしはぶどうの木で、あなたがたは枝です。人がわたしにとどまり、わたしもその人の中にとどまっているなら、そういう人は多くの実を結びます。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何もすることができないからです。 6 だれでも、もしわたしにとどまっていなければ、枝のように投げ捨てられて、枯れます。人々はそれを寄せ集めて火に投げ込むので、それは燃えてしまいます。 8 あなたがたが多くの実を結び、わたしの弟子となることによって、わたしの父は栄光をお受けになるのです。
I am sure that you have all noticed these flowers here today. 今日、ここに花があることにお気づきだと思います。
They look so beautiful. とても美しく見えます。
And they smell wonderful. そしてすばらしい香りがします。
People have probably always picked flowers from their gardens to put in their homes. たぶん人は家に飾るために昔から庭から花を摘んでいたでしょう。 They can make a dark place bright. 花は暗い場所を輝かせることができます。
And their fragrance can fill the whole room with fresh air. そして花の香りは新しい空気で部屋を満たすことができるのです。
Just look at these flowers. この花を見てください。
They are beautiful! 美しいですね！
There is something about flowers that uplifts your heart. 花には心をウキウキさせるものがあります。
Their freshness and fragrance makes you feel alive. 花のさわやかさと香りは、あなたを生き生きとさせます。
But here is my question… では、ここで質問をします。
Are these flowers alive? この花は生きているのでしょうか？
Well, they look fantastic! この花は素敵に見えます！
They are so colorful. とても色彩豊かです！
They smell great. とても素敵な香りがします。
So they must be alive, right? だからこの花は生きているのでしょうか？
Is it ok for the flowers to boast about their situation now? その立場を誇ることは、花にとって良いことなのでしょうか？
What about next week? 来週になったらどうなるでしょう？
What will they be like then? そのころ、この花はどうなっているでしょう？
They will have withered. この花はしおれてしまっているでしょう。
They will have lost their color and their fragrance. 色も香りも失ってしまっているでしょう。
In fact, they will probably be dead. たぶん枯れているでしょう。
And if that is the case, then they will no doubt have been thrown away. そうなったら、まちがいなくこの花は捨てられるでしょう。
What will happen to their boasting then? そうなったら、花の誇るものはどうなるでしょう？
But why will the flowers die? でも花はなぜ死んでしまったのでしょう？
Well, I’m very glad you asked. それはとてもいい疑問です。 It’s because, of course, they don’t have any roots. なぜなら、この花には根っこがないからです。
The flowers have been cut off from the roots. この花は根っこから切りとられました。
They have been separated from the roots. この花は根っこから切り離されました。
They are not attached to the roots. この花は根っこにつながっていません。 I looked up the word “root.” 私は『根っこ』という言葉に目を向けます。
The explanation included the following words: 『根っこ』には、次のような言葉が含まれます。
“origin, source, cause, basis, starting place and core.” 起源、根源、原因、基礎、スタート地点、核
So, the root of a plant is absolutely essential to its existence. だから、植物の根っこはその存在のために必要不可欠なものです。
The roots are the source of life of a plant. 根っこは植物の命の源なのです。
They provide the plant with water and nutrition. 根っこは植物に水と栄養を与えます。
They are the core of its life. 根っこは植物の命の核なのです。
So, as long as the plant is attached to the roots, the plant can receive the water and nutrition that it needs to survive. だから、植物は根っこにつながっている限り、生きるために必要な水や栄養を受け取ることができます。 And, what is more, the roots also physically support the plant. さらに、根っこは植物の身体も支えています。
When the wind blows, and when the rain pours down, the roots stop the plant from being washed away. 風が吹いたとき、雨が激しく降るとき、根っこは植物が倒れないように支えます。
The roots keep the plant upright. 根っこは植物をまっすぐな状態に保ちます。
So, a plant is only able to bloom and be beautiful because of the roots that support it. 植物は花を咲かせることができ、美しい姿でいられるのは、ただ根っこが支えてくれるからです。
However, there is an interesting thing about roots. しかし、根っこにはおもしろいところがあります。
They are hidden from sight. 根っこは私たちの視界から見えないところにあります。
You can’t see them. 根っこは見えません。
In fact, when you look at a flower, you don’t even think about its roots. 事実、花を見るとき、その根っこについてなど、考えもしません。
The flower is the focus of our attention. 私たちの関心は花に集中します。
But the flower can only be there because of its roots. しかし、花は根っこがあるからそこに存在できるのです。
The life of the flower originates with the roots. 花の命の根元は根っこにあります。
And those very same roots continue to support and provide life for the flower… その根っこは、花のためにその体を支え、命を与え続けます。
even though you can’t see them. たとえその姿が見えなくても・・・。
So, what about these flowers? では、この花についてはどうでしょう？
These flowers have been cut off from their roots. この花は根っこから切り離されています。
They have been cut off from their source of life. この花は命の源から切り離されています。
They are disconnected from their source of nutrition and support. この花は栄養と支えの源から断ち切られています。
However, we have to agree that they still look really beautiful. しかし、それにしても、この花がまだ美しく見えることを認めざるを得ません。
They smell great. とても良い香りがします。
They certainly look like they are alive. この花は確かにまだ生きているように見えます。
But the reality is that they are being artificially supported. しかし、現実には、この花は人工的に支えられています。
The walls of the vase prop the flowers up nice and straight. 花瓶のかべは、花を見た目のいいように、まっすぐにもたせかけます。
And the water in the vase prevents them from immediately wilting. そして、花瓶の水は花がすぐにしおれてしまうことを防ぎます。
They look nice. この花はきれいに見えます。
No, they look great. いいえ、花はすばらしいです。
But it is only artificial support. しかし、それは人工的なものです。
So, the flowers are alive. だから、この花は生きているのでしょう。
But the reality is that the flowers have been cut off from their roots. しかし、現実には、花は根っこから切り離されています。
They have been cut off from the source of their life. 命の源から切り離されています。
Ok then, let me ask another question. では、（私に）もうひとつ質問させてください。
Are these flowers living things? この花は生きているものですか？ Well, if we just think about them one way, yes, we must say that they ARE living things. ある方向から見たら、そうです！この花は生きているものだというべきです
If we compare these flowers to, say, the piano, then it is clear that the piano is not a living thing; この花を例えばピアノと比べたら、それは明らかです。ピアノは生きているものではありません。
Well, when Kenji plays it, it seems like it is a living thing! まあ、健司君がピアノを弾いていたら、ピアノはまるで生きているもののようですが！
No. The piano is not a living thing. いいえ・・・ピアノは生きているものではありません。
But the flowers are. でも花は生きています。
So, from that perspective, these flowers are a living thing. つまり、この視点から見ると、花は生きているものです。
However, let’s think about what is happening to these flowers. しかし、この花の本当の状態について考えてみましょう。
Yesterday, someone picked them and put them in this vase. 昨日、誰かがこの花を摘み取り、この花瓶に活けました。
Today, they still look and smell so fresh. 今日、この花はまだ香りがよく、イキイキしているように見えます。
So, on the one hand, these flowers are certainly not dead yet. 一方では、この花はたしかにまだ死んではいません。
They are alive. この花は生きています。
They seem like they are living things. 生きているように見えます。
On the other hand, however, in which direction are they heading? では、この花はどちらの方向に向かっているのでしょうか？
In other words, are they heading towards having life? つまり、命、生を持つものでしょうか？
Or, are they heading towards death? それとも、もう死に向かっているのでしょうか？
Are they living beings, or are they dying things? 生きるものか、死ぬものか？
If they are connected to their source of life, they are receiving life. 命の源とつながっていたら、この花は命を受けています。
We could say that they are heading towards life. 私たちは、この花は生きるものと言えました。
So they are living things. だから、この花は生きるものです。
But if they are cut off from their roots; でも、この花が根っこと切り離されていたら、
if they are separated from the source of their life, then, they are heading towards death. もし、命の源から切り離されていたら、この花は死に向かうものに分類されます。
They are dying things この花は死ぬものです。
So, sadly, the beauty and strength of these flowers are only superficial. 悲しいけれど、この花の美しさと力は表面的なものです。
They are not lasting. それは続きません。
Because the flowers are not attached to their roots, they will all be lost in death. 花はその根っこにつながっていないので、やがて枯れてしまうでしょう。
Interestingly, as we have just read, Jesus describes Himself as a vine. おもしろいことですが、先ほど読んでいたように、イエス様はご自身をブドウと表現されました。
In fact, He calls Himself the “true vine,” and His Father God is the gardener. イエス様はご自身を『真の葡萄』、そして天の御父を農夫とおっしゃいました。 And then He continues: そして、このように続けておっしゃいます。
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. わたしはぶどうの木で、あなたがたは枝です。人がわたしにとどまり、わたしもその人の中にとどまっているなら、そういう人は多くの実を結びます。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何もすることができないからです。
If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. (John 15:5,6) だれでも、もしわたしにとどまっていなければ、枝のよう(１)に投げ捨てられて、枯れます。人々はそれを寄せ集めて火に投げ込むので、それは燃えてしまいます。（ヨハネ１５章５節〜６節）
In other words, Jesus is saying that we are like plants. つまり、イエス様は私たちが植物のようなものだと言っていらっしゃいます。
We are like these flowers. 私たちはこの花のようです。
Jesus is the Vine. イエス様は『葡萄』です。
He is the root. イエス様は根っこなのです。
Jesus is the source of life. イエス様は命の源です。
The reason for life. 命の理由です。
Jesus is the core of life. イエス様は命の核です。
And the Lord God is the gardener. そして、天の御父は農夫です。
God treats us according to our relationship with Jesus. 神様は、イエス様が私たちとつながってくださったことによって取り上げてくださいます。神様は私たちのイエス様との関係に応じて取り扱います。
If we are connected to Jesus, He prunes us so that we will bear rich fruit in our lives. 私たちがイエス様とつながっているなら、神様は私たちの人生に豊かな実りが結ばれるように私たちを刈り込まれます。
But if we are not attached, we cannot bear fruit; しかし、もし私たちがイエス様とつながっていないなら、私たちは実を結ぶことができません。
and in the end, we will be cut off and burned. そして、ついには、取り除かれ、燃やされてしまうでしょう。
It is a severe picture. それは悲惨な状況です。
Because the Bible confronts us with the reality that the source of our life is God それは、聖書が私たちに命の源が神様であるということに向き合わせてくれます。
but we are born separated from God しかし、私たちは神様から切り離されて生まれます。
we are cut off from the source of life from the beginning. 私たちは、最初から、命の源から切り離されています。
It’s not that we are born in a relationship with God, that we are good, and then we do something bad and get cut off from God. 私たちは神様と正しい関係を持ち、正しいものとして生まれ、そこでいつの間にか悪いことをし、神様から離れていってしまうということではありません。
Our standing with God is not about being a good person or a bad person 私たちの神様との立場は良い人間であるか、悪い人間であるかではない、ということです。
In other words, being attached to the True Vine, being connected to the source and meaning of life is not based on what we can do, or what we cannot do. つまり、まことのぶどうの木、命の源であり命の意味を与える方に繋がるのは、私たちができる、或いはできないことによるものではありません。 So then, who can be connected to God? そうするとしたら、誰が神様に繋がることができるのでしょうか？ Who can be close to God? 誰が神様と一緒にいることができるのでしょうか？ Jesus taught about this through a parable. イエス様はこのことをあるたとえ話を通して教えてくださいました。
There was a Pharisee. パリサイ人がいました。
He was a religious leader. 彼は宗教的リーダーでした。
He looked like he was a good person. 彼は良い人のように見えました。
He was popular. 彼は人気がありました。
He was respected. 彼は尊敬されていました。
His work was sacred. 彼の仕事は神聖でした。
And then there was a tax collector. そして取税人も出てきます。
He represented the worst of sinners. 彼はもっとも悪い罪人をあらわしています。
He was despised by the people. 彼は人々にひどく嫌われていました。
And he was considered to be cast out by God. そして彼は神様に追い払われるものと思われていました。
Jesus described the scene where the two men were praying to God. イエス様は二人の人が神様に祈っている場面について語られました。
"The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: `God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' パリサイ人は、立って、心の中でこんな祈りをした。『神よ。私はほかの人々のようにゆする者、不正な者、姦淫する者ではなく、ことにこの取税人のようではないことを、感謝します。私は週に二度断食し、自分の受けるものはみな、その十分の一をささげております。』
"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, `God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'" (Luke 18:11-13) ところが、取税人は遠く離れて立ち、目を天に向けようともせず、自分の胸をたたいて言った。『神さま。こんな罪人の私をあわれんでください。』
And then Jesus rammed home his point: イエス様は、大切なことを効果的に盛り込みました。
"I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 18:14) あなたがたに言うが、この人が、義と認められて家に帰りました。パリサイ人ではありません。なぜなら、だれでも自分を高くする者は低くされ、自分を低くする者は高くされるからです。」
On the surface, the Pharisee seemed like he was right with God. 表面的には、パリサイ人は神様の前で正しいようでした。
It looked like he was close to God. 彼は神様に近いように見えました。
And the people listening to Jesus would have assumed that the tax collector was far from God. 一方、イエス様のお話を聞いていた人々は、取税人は神様から遠い存在だと決めてかかっていました。
However, Jesus is pointing out that the Pharisee was actually facing away from God. しかし、イエス様はパリサイ人の方が実際には神様から遠い存在だと指摘されました。
We must remember that even though the Pharisee did actually have a sacred job; 大事なことは、パリサイ人が実際に神聖な仕事を持っていましたが、
his job, and his very position before God was actually a gift – a privilege. しかし、その仕事や、神様の前における自分の地位こそが賜であり、名誉であったこととして覚えなければなりません。
However, the Pharisee was exalting himself. しかし、パリサイ人は自分自身が偉いと思っていました。
He was boasting on his own goodness, his own self-sufficiency. 彼は自分自身の美点、自分自身で為したことだと自慢していました。
But these things that he thought were sustaining him were all just superficial. しかし、彼が自分を支えてくれていると思っていたものはみな表面上なものに過ぎなかったです。 It was actually his back that was turned to the source of life. 命の源に頼るものでした。
He was like a flower that didn’t know it was in a vase. 彼は花瓶の中にあることに気づかない、花のようでした。
He was boasting in what he thought was his own beauty and strength. 彼が考えたことが彼自身の美徳であり、強さであると自慢していました。
But he was actually cut off from the source of life. しかし、彼は本当は命の源から切り離されていました。
On the other hand, the tax collector realized his own situation. 一方、取税人は彼自身の立場を理解していました。
He knew that he was separated from God. 彼は自分が神様から切り離されたものであることを自覚していました。
The tax collector’s many problems seemed to be obvious to everyone. 取税人の多くの問題はだれの目にも明らかなようでしたが。
But most importantly, he was aware of his greatest problem himself. しかし最も重要なのは、彼が自分自身の大きな問題に気付いていたことでした。
So he desperately wanted help. だから彼は必死になって助けを求めました。
This person cried out to God for mercy. だからこの取税人は神様にお慈悲を求めました。 He actually asked for help. 彼は積極的に助けを頼みました。
He asked God to make him a living being. 彼は、自分を生きるものに変えてくださるように神様に祈りました。 And it was because he did this, it was only because he did this, that it was the tax collector who was actually close to God. 彼はそうしたから、そうしただけで、神様と一緒にいることができるようになったのは、取税人でした。
It was the tax collector who became connected to the source of life. 命の源につながるようになったのは取税人でした。
Therefore, it was the tax collector who would receive sustaining life from God. だから、神様から持続する命を受け取っていたのは取税人でした。
The Pharisee looked good. パリサイ人がよく見えました。 It looked like he had life, 命を持っているように見えたのです。 But instead of seeking an actual relationship with God for his life. しかし、神様との個人的な関係を求める代わりに the Pharisee propped himself up with his religious practices. パリサイ人は自分が大切にしてきた宗教に基づく習慣を持って自分を支えようとしてきたのです。 He was not connected to the True Vine of Life. まことの命のぶどうの木にはつながっていなかった。 He was actually separated from God. 事実、彼は神様から離れていました。 So he could not bear fruit. そういうわけで、彼は実を結ぶことができませんでした。 He was like a flower cut off from the roots. 根っこから切り取られた花のようでした。 He was separated from God. 彼は神様から離れていました。 His religion itself couldn’t produce life. 彼の宗教の習慣そのものが命を作り出すことができなかった。 He was a dying being. 彼は死ぬものだったのです。 And so like a withered branch, he would have been thrown on the fire to burn. だから、彼は枯れた枝のように投げ込まれ、燃やされたでしょう。 It is a shocking scene. 悲惨な場面です。 But at the same time, or rather, it is because this is such a shocking scene, that Jesus’ is revealing His passion, His desperation, for us to have life. でも、というよりも、あんなに悲惨なことだから、私たちが本当の命が保たれるように Jesus is desperate for us to be living beings. 私たちが生きるものになれるようにイエス様は必死です。 And in order for that to happen, we need to be attached to the True Vine. そして、そうなれるように、私たちはまことのぶどう木につながっていなければなりません。
In the New Testament, Paul tells us that:
(Therefore,) if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Becoming a new creation is not about changing our way of thinking. 新しく造られるというのは、自分の考え方を変えるということではありません。 It is not done by establishing new habits. 新しい習慣を身につけることによってできるものでもありません。 It does not happen when bad people become good people. 悪い人がいい人になってから起こることでも無い。 A new creation is not a superficial change. 新しく造られるというのは、表面的な変化と違います。
It is an exchange. 交換です。 It is when a dying being becomes a living being. 死ぬものが生きるものに変えられる時のことです。 It is when a person who was cut off from the root becomes attached to the source of life. いわゆる根っこから切り取られた人が命の源に繋がれるようになる時のことです。 It is when someone who was separated from God enters into a relationship with Him. 神様から離れていた人が、神様と個人的な関係が結ばれるようになる時のことです。 We become new creations when we discard the former, superficial things that we used to prop our lives us with, 私たちは新しく作られるものになるのは、以前私たちが使っていた表面的な人生の支えをすてて、 and we replace them with the True Vine, with the source of life. その代わりにまことのぶどうの木、命の源を受け入れる時です。
In today’s reading, Jesus is talking to His disciples. 今日の聖書箇所においてはイエス様は弟子たちに語っておられました。 He is teaching those who know Him; those who want to know Him. ご自身を知っている者、イエス様を知りたいという者にイエス様は教えています。 Jesus is saying that they need to remain in Him. 彼らはイエス様にとどまらなければならない、と言っておられます。 Jesus is saying that we need to remain in Jesus. 私たちがイエス様にとどまらなければならない、と言っておられます。
And He explains that when we do remain in Him, we can, we will, bear fruit in our lives. そして、私たちが実際ご自身にとどまるとするなら、私たちは必ず自分の人生には実を結ばれるよ、と、イエス様は教えています。 In fact, remaining in Jesus, bearing fruit in our lives, actually brings glory to God. 事実として、イエス様にとどまることは、実際に神様に栄光をもたらすのです。 There are so many things in our lives that we use to prop ourselves up like flower vases. 私たちは花瓶のように、多くのものを持って私たちの人生を支えようとするでしょう。 Even if we might not be consciously aware of it, we hold expectations in our hearts that it is the things that we do that make us acceptable. 意識していなくても、自分が受け入れてもらえるのは自分の行い次第という思いをついに心の中には抱くことはあるでしょう。 We can tend to think that it is our looks and our achievements that give us purpose and fulfilment in life. そこで、私たちはどう見えるか、私たちの業績が私たちの人生に意義と心の満たしを与えてくれるように思う傾向がないでしょうか？ But Jesus is not only pointing out that those things are only artificial; しかし、イエス様は、そういったものがただ表面的なものにすぎないこと that they cannot replace the true source of life and its meaning; そういったものは命、人生の真の源や意味の代わりにはならないことを告げているだけではなく、 Jesus is also encouraging us to realize, to understand, that we, no matter how small we are; イエス様は私たちに進めよう、理解させようとしていることは、私たちがどんなに小さいものでも、 no matter how weak we may feel; 私たちがいくら弱いものであったとしても、 regardless of what mistakes and failures we have made in our lives; 自分の人生にはどんなにひどい過ちや失敗を起こしたとしても、 when we look to Jesus as our help; 私たちはイエス様を助け主として仰ぎ見ると、 when we trust that Jesus 私たちはイエス様を信頼し、 when we are like that tax collector and cry out to Jesus in desperation; あの取税人のように、イエス様に必死に呼び求めるとするなら、 He is there to comfort us. そこにイエス様はおられ、私たちを慰めてくださる。 He tells us His grace is sufficient for us; 神様の恵みはあなたにとっては充分だと教えてくださる。 He will never leave us or forsake us; イエス様はあなたを決して離れ、見捨てることはしない、と。 He has blessed us with the eternal blessings of heaven; 「神はキリストにあって、天にあるすべての霊的祝福をもって私たちを祝福してくださいました。」と。 and when we remain in Him, we, we, we, will bring glory to God. そして、私たちは、イエス様にとどまるのなら、私たちが神様に栄光をもたらします。 The eternal, holy, almighty creator of heaven and earth is glorified when we keep trusting in Jesus. 私たちはイエス様を信頼し続けると、永遠なる聖なる全治なる天と地の創造主が栄光をお受けになります。 This is the fruit that God wants to nurture in our lives. これこそは神様が私たちの人生の中に育てたい実なのです。 Jesus is not only the source of life. イエス様は命の源だけではなく、 He is the source of all true joy, fulfilment, hope, peace, and strength. イエス様は全てのまことの喜び、充実感、希望、平安と力の源です。 In our quiet thoughts when we are alone; 私たちは一人で静まっている時、 when we are caring for our families; enjoying our friends; or striving at work; 家族の世話をしたり、友達と時間を楽しんだり、仕事に励んだりするとき、 trusting in Jesus; イエス様に信頼を置くこと、 remaining in Jesus: イエス様にとどまること continuing to receive His love, continuing to share in His love; イエス様の愛を受け続けたり、また、分かち合い続けたりすること、 This brings glory to God; このことこそが神様に栄光をもたらします。 this bears fruit in our lives このことこそが私たちの人生に実を結びます。 And this glory of God’s shines in our hearts and gives us the true, everlasting, beauty and fragrance and strength of life. そして、神様のその栄光が私たちの心にかがやかし、私たちにまことの、消えることのない人生の美しさ、香り、力を与えてくださいます。
