Genesis 4:3-8 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." What do you see when you look in the mirror? あなたは鏡を見ると何が見えますか？
Of course, you see a reflection of yourself. もちろん、自分がそこに映っているのが見えます。
But what does that reflection look like to you? それでは、そこに映ってるものがあなたには何に見えますか？
What do you see in that reflection? そこに映し出されているものの中に何が見えますか？
Mirrors can be strange things. 鏡とは不思議なものです。
They should be objective, only showing us what is really there. 本来そこに何があるかを客観的に見せるだけのものですが、
But sometimes, we can look into the same mirror, but see different things. 時に、その同じ鏡の中に違うものが見えることがあります。
Mirrors are not only made of glass. 鏡はガラスで作られるだけではありません。
People are also mirrors. 人も鏡となります。
We recently read about Adam and Eve. 私達は最近アダムとイヴについて読みました。
God had created Adam and Eve in His own image. 神はアダムとイヴをご自身の似姿に造られました。
God had made them to reflect His perfect holiness, justice and love in their own lives. アダムとイヴが自分たちの中に神の完全なる神聖さ、正義、そして愛を反映するように神は彼らを造られました。 God’s perfect holiness, justice and love covered them like clothing. 神の完全なる神聖さ、正義、そして愛がまるで服を纏っているように彼らを覆いました。
Therefore, when Adam looked at Eve, and when he looked at himself, what he saw was God’s perfect holiness, justice and love reflected in each of them. ですからアダムがイヴを見たときそして自分を見たとき彼に見えたのはそれぞれに反映された神の完全な神聖さ、正義、そして愛でした。
And Eve saw the same when she looked at Adam and herself. そしてイヴがアダムと彼女自身を見たとき同じものが見えました。
She also saw God’s perfect holiness, justice and love. 彼女にも神の完全な神聖さ、正義、そして愛が見えました。 They were both covered with God’s glory. 彼等は二人とも神の栄光で覆われていました。 And they were to reflect that glory. そして彼らはその栄光を反映する者であるべきでした。
They were to reflect that glory back to God, to each other, and to the world. 彼等は神に、お互いに、そして世に向けてその栄光を表す者であるべきでした。
But, as you know, the instant Adam and Eve turned their backs on God, they lost the covering of His glory. しかしご承知の通り、アダムとイヴが神に背いた瞬間 彼らは神の栄光の覆いを 失いました。
So, when they looked at each other, they saw each other without the covering of God’s glory. そのためお互いを見たとき、神の栄光の覆いが無いそれぞれの姿が見えました。
And when they looked at themselves, they saw themselves without the covering of God’s glory. そして自分を見たとき見えたのは神の栄光に覆われていない自分の姿でした。
Instead of holiness, there was ungodliness; 神聖さではなく邪悪が、
Instead of justice, there was injustice; 正義ではなく不正義が、
And instead of love, there was self-centeredness. そして愛のかわりに自己本位がありました。
最近わたしはこんな漫画を見つけました： They are not actual people. 彼等は実在の人と関係ありません。
And any possible resemblance to real people is absolutely only a coincidence. そして万一実在する人に似ているとしてもそれは単に全くの偶然です。
But they do tell a familiar story. しかし彼らが語っていることは私達が良く耳にする話です。
“Do you know why I hate Nermal?
なぜナーマルが憎いか分かるかい？
“It’s not because he’s so young, tiny and cute.
彼が若くて、小さくて、そして可愛いからじゃないんだ。
“He reminds me I’m so old, fat and ugly.”
彼を見ると自分がこんなに年寄りで、太って、醜いことに気付かされる からなんだ。
When we look at other people, we often compare ourselves to them. 人は他人を見るとしばしば自分を彼らと比べます。 For better … or worse, we see ourselves reflected in the people around us. 良きにつけ悪しきにつけ、私達は廻りの人に映し出された自分を見ます。
We all do it. 私達は皆それをします。
We might not always be aware of it. 必ずしもそのことに気付いてないかもしれません。
But when we look at someone who seems better than ourselves in some way, we are often left feeling inadequate. けれどもどこか自分より優れてるように思える人を見ると、私達はしばしば未熟だという感情に陥ります。
And in turn we look for weaknesses and faults in other people to gloss over our own short comings. すると今度は自分の至らない点を取り繕うために他人の弱点や欠点を探します。
This is the result of not being covered by God’s glory – His perfect holiness, justice and love. 神の栄光、完全なる神聖さ、そして愛で覆われてない結果こうなります。
It is something that we all share. It is the result of our being separated from God. それは全ての人が持っているもので私達が神から引き離された結果です。
It is the result of our being incomplete. 私達が不完全なためにそうなります。
Cain was just the same. カインも同じでした。
Cain and his younger brother Abel had brought offerings to the Lord God. カインと弟のアベルは神に捧げものを持ってきました。
Abel’s offering was accepted, but Cain’s offering was not accepted. アベルの捧げものは受け入れられましたが、カインの捧げものは受け入れられませんでした。
We have already confirmed that Abel’s offering was accepted because it reflected his faith in God. アベルの捧げものは、それが彼の神への信仰を表していたから受け入れられたことを既に確認しました。
Abel believed that it was what God had done for him that made him right with God. 神に義とされたのは神がアベルの為になされたことのお蔭だと彼は信じました。
And it was, in fact, just because he believed this, that God declared him to be righteous. そして実に彼がこのことを信じたために神は彼を義と認められました。
God had given Abel the gift of the covering of His own righteousness. 神はご自身の義の覆いという賜物をアベルに与えました。
God’s glory was therefore reflected in Abel through his faith in God. ですから 彼の神への信仰を通してアベルの中に神の栄光が表されました。 However, Cain did not understand that God had done this for him too. しかし、神がこのことを自分にもして下さったことがカインには分かりませんでした。
He didn’t understand his need for what God had done for him. 神がして下さった事がカインにとり必要だったという事が分かりませんでした。
He did not have this faith in God. 彼には神へのこの信仰がありませんでした。
And so Cain did not seek, or receive, what God had done for him. そういうわけでカインは神が彼のためにしてくださった事を求めようとも或いは受けることもしませんでした。
Therefore, Cain remained without the covering of God’s righteousness. ですから、カインは神の義の覆いが無いままでした。
So, when Cain looked at Abel, what did he see? では カインがアベルを見た時彼には何が見えたでしょうか？
And when Cain looked at himself, what did he see? そして自分を見た時何が見えたでしょうか？
He saw that Abel had something that he did not. カインは自分が持ってない何かをアベルが持っていることに気付きました。
When Cain looked at Able, Cain saw God’s righteousness reflected within Abel. カインがアベルを見た時、アベルの中に反映されている神の義が見えました。
Cain saw his own self in the light of God’s glory being reflected back at him. カインは神の栄光の光に照らされて映し出された自分自身の姿を見ました。
And Cain realized that there was a huge difference between his brother and himself. そこで カインは彼の弟と自分との間に大きな違いがある事に気付きました。
He realized that it was the huge distance that was between God and himself. それが神と自分との間の遠く離れた距離であることに気付きました。
His reaction? 彼はそれにどう反応しましたか？
Anger. 怒りました。
Cain became very angry. カインは非常に怒りました。
Now, if we think logically about this, what should Cain have done? さてこのことを論理的に考えた場合、カインは何をすべきだったのでしょうか。
Well, maybe it depends on what you call logic. もっともそれは何を論理と呼ぶかにも拠りますが。
But the logic that we are looking at here is in holding what God has shown, to be true. しかし私たちが今ここで見ている論理とは 神が示されたことは真実であるとしっかり信じることに在ります。
Proverbs 3:5 tells us: 箴言３章５節は私達に次のように伝えています：
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) 心を尽くして【主】に拠り頼め。自分の悟りにたよるな。（箴言3章５節）
Cain had been trying to approach God his own way – カインは自分のやり方 － つまり
by his own thinking; his own work; what he did. 自分の考えに基づいて、自分の働きによって、自分がしたことによって一生懸命神に近づこうとしました。
Cain had been relying on his own self. カインは自分に拠り頼んでいました。
It’s like he was carrying a bag. まるでカバンを持ち運んでいるように
He was filling that bag with everything that he thought he needed to make himself right. 自分を正しく見せるために必要だと思った物全てをそのカバンに詰めていました。
Cain thought that he had to find the way to get close to God himself. カインは神に近づく道を自分で見つけなければならないと思いました。
And he thought that he could carry that bag by himself. そして自分の力でそのカバンを持ち運ぶことが出来ると思いました。 Do you carry a bag like this? あなたはそのようなカバンを持ち運びますか？
Consciously, or maybe even subconsciously, do you think you have to shoulder this burden yourself? 意識してあるいはもしかしたら無意識のうちにあなたはこのような重荷を負わなければならないと思っていませんか？
By the way, I have a two part Bible quiz today. ところで今日は聖書に関して二つの質問をします。
Here is the first question: 最初の質問です：
What is the First of the Ten Commandments? 十戒で最初に示された戒めは何ですか？
Answer: 答えは：
"You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3)
あなたには、わたしのほかに、ほかの神々があってはならない。（出エジプト２０章3節） Now, I have never even thought to not believe in the God of the Bible. さて、私は聖書の神を信じないことなど一度たりとて考えたことはありません。
I could not in all logical, rational sanity refute His clear design in the web of life that surrounds us. 論理的そして理性的な健全さをもって見れば、私達の廻りを取り囲む生命の仕組みに示された神の明確な意図に誤りを見つけることなど絶対に出来ません。
I cannot deny the personal hold that He has on His creation. ご自身の創造物に対して神が有する影響力を否定することなど出来ません。
What could possibly replace the almighty, eternal God? 一体何が全能で永遠の神にとって代わることが出来るというのでしょうか？
Could trees or statues carved into shapes by people be more worthy of my worship? 人が削って形作られた木像や彫像がより大きな崇拝を私から受けるに値するなどという事があり得るでしょうか。
Could money, technology or medicine provide the answer to my ultimate purpose and eternal destination in life? お金や、技術あるいは医学が私の人生における究極の目的や永遠の目的地へと導く答えを与えてくれるでしょうか？
Could entertainment fill my deepest needs for acceptance, love, and companionship? 私が心底求めていることつまり受け入れてもらうこと、愛、そして仲間関係というものを 娯楽が満たしてくれるでしょうか？
If I were to stop and think about those things themselves, I would be quick to say no! 立ち止まってこれらの事を考えると、私は即座に「いいえ」 と答えます。
I know, even without thinking deeply, that those things are only superficial props。 深く考えなくても、これらの事は表面上の支えに過ぎないことが分かります。 But there is one more thing that is perhaps not so obvious. けれども多分あまり目につかないことがもう一つあります。
Something that can, even without us being aware of it, become our God. 自分が気が付かないうちに何かが私たちの神になり得ます。
It becomes the thing that we hold closest to our hearts; 自分の心の一番近くに大切に抱きかかえるものとなります。
We seek our purpose in it; 私達はその中に目的を求めます。
We rely on it for our understanding; 悟りが開けるようにとそれに頼ります。
It becomes the focus of our quest for love and acceptance; それは 愛を求め 受け入れてもらう事を求めるための重要な拠り所となります。
It becomes the standard, and the source, of our righteousness. それが我々の義の基準そして源となります。
What is this thing that would break the First Commandment? 第一の戒めを破るこのものは何でしょうか？
It is me – my self. それは私自身です。
Even without us realizing it, we can very easily become our own god. たとえその事に気が付いていなくても、私達は容易に自分自身の神になれます。
But what kind of gods do we become? でもどのような類（たぐい）の神になるのでしょうか？
What kind of holiness, justice and love do we have? どのような神聖さ、正義、そして愛を備えた神でしょうか？
We carry a bag and fill it with our own understanding. 私達はカバンを抱え独りよがりの悟りでもってそのカバンを満たします。
We create our own standard; 自分で基準を造ります。
Our sense of righteousness and justice becomes based on our own feelings and experience; 自分の義と正義が自分自身の感情や経験によって出来てしまいます。
We believe that we can make ourselves right. 私達は自分を正しい者とすることが出来ると信じています。
We think that we have the potential, just within ourselves, to get through life here; and to safely secure some kind of eternal life for ourselves. この世での人生を送りそして独力で何らかの形の永遠の命を無事見つけることが出来ると自分の中で思いがちです。
Our priority is to protect our self. 自分で自分を守ることを優先します。 Cain had been carrying this kind of bag. カインはこの種のカバンを運んでいました。
In reality, he was seeking his righteousness within himself, in what he did. 実際カインは彼の義を自身の中にそして自分がしたことに求めていました。
But then Cain found out that nothing that he had put into that so-called bag could earn him his righteousness. しかしその時カインは あのいわゆるカバンの中に入れたいかなる物も彼に義をもたらすことは出来なかったことに気付きました。
He was like the man who built his house on the foundation of sand that Jesus described. 彼はイエス様が説教で話された砂の上に家を建てたあの男の人のようでした。 The righteousness that he had tried to build up had just been exposed as being without foundation; 彼が必死に造り上げようとした義はしっかりした土台の無い物として露呈されました。
And his world suddenly came crashing down around him. そして彼の世界は突如彼の廻りでがたがたと崩れ落ちました。
So, what did Cain do? そこでカインはどうしたでしょうか？
He looked at his brother, Abel. 彼は弟のアベルを見ました。
He saw that Abel had something that he did not have. そしてアベルが彼にはない何かを持っていることに気付きました。
It was that one thing that Cain had wanted more than anything. それはカインが何よりも望んだものでした。
It was what he had worked so hard to earn. それを得るために彼は必死に働きました。
But his work had been in vain. けれどもその努力は無駄でした。
And so when Cain looked at his brother, he saw his own blatant inadequacy before God being reflected back at himself. そこでカインが弟を見た時神のみ前で甚だ不十分な自分が映し出されている のを見ました。
Able had what Cain had desired. アベルはカインが望んだものを持っていました。
And now Cain despised his brother because of it. そのために今やカインは弟を侮蔑しました。
In Cain’s mind, Abel had now become his rival for God’s attention. カインの心の中でアベルは今や神の注意を引くための競争相手となりました。
Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. (Genesis 4:8)
It reminds me of Joseph’s ten older brothers. 私はこの話からヨセフの１０人の兄達を思い出します。
They craved their father’s attention. 彼等は切に父の注意を引こうとしました。
But their father only had eyes for Joseph. けれども彼らの父はただヨセフだけに関心を寄せました。
So the brothers planned to kill Joseph. そこで兄弟たちはヨセフを殺そうと計画しました。
They thought that if they could just get rid of Joseph, then their father would turn his attention to them. ヨセフを亡き者にしさえすれば父が彼らに注意を向けるだろうと考えました。
Maybe that is how Cain felt. 恐らく同じことをカインは思ったのでしょう。
Or, maybe, he just burned with jealousy over Abel. それとも彼はアベルに激しい嫉妬心を抱いただけかもしれません。
The tragedy, one of the tragedies here, is that it was totally unnecessary. 悲劇、ここでの悲劇の一つは彼は嫉妬する必要は全くなかったということです。
Joseph’s father, Jacob, certainly did have a problem with favoritism. ヨセフの父ヤコブには確かに偏愛と言う問題がありました。
There is no excuse for what the ten brothers ended up doing to Joseph; １０人の兄達が結局ヨセフにしたことに言い訳の余地は全くありません。
But we can still sympathize with their situation. しかし私達は彼らの立場に同情できます。
However, this was certainly not the case with Cain. けれどもカインの場合は状況が全く違いました。
As we saw last month, God had sought to reach out to Cain in his disappointment and anger. 先月学んだように、失望と怒りの中にあるカインに神は救いの手を差し伸べられました。
God called on Cain to trust in Himself – in God. 神はカインが神に拠り頼むように呼びかけました。
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) 心を尽くして【主】に拠り頼め。自分の悟りにたよるな。（箴言3章５節）
This verse does not just refer to various decisions we make in life. この教えは、私達が人生で下す様々な決断に言及しているだけではありません。
It focuses on the heart of the biggest decision that we must make in life. 私たちが生きて行く中で下さなければならない最も大きな決断の核心に焦点が 宛てられています。
Will you believe, will you trust, what God has done for you? 神があなたにしてくださった事をあなたは信じそして神に拠り頼みますか？
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 心を尽くして【主】に拠り頼め。自分の悟りにたよるな。
in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. あなたの行く所どこにおいても、主を認めよ。そうすれば、主はあなたの道をまっすぐにされる。
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. (Proverbs 3:5-7) 自分を知恵のある者と思うな。【主】を恐れて、悪から離れよ（箴言3章５節〜7節）
This is the foundation on which to base every other decision in life. これこそ人がその生涯の中で下す全ての決定の基盤となるべきものです。
Cain saw that Abel was accepted by God. カインはアベルが神に受け入れられたことを見ました。
And Cain wanted that acceptance for himself. そしてカインは自分も受け入れてもらいたいと願いました。
But in order to receive that acceptance, Cain needed to be covered by God’s glory. 然し受け入れてもらうにはカインは神の栄光に覆われる必要がありました。
So, God reached out to Cain; そこで神はカインに呼びかけました。
God told him that all Cain needed to do was acknowledge this; 神はカインに必要なのはこのことを認めるだけでよいと彼に伝えました；
to believe in this; このことを信じ、
and therefore to receive the gift that God had prepared for him. そして神が彼のために備えて下さった贈り物を受け取ることです。
God wanted Cain to know the truth about Himself. 神はご自身についての真実をカインに知って欲しかったのでした。
God wanted Cain to know Him for who He really is. 神が本当はどのようなお方かをカインに知って欲しかったのでした。
God wanted Cain to enjoy Him for who He really is. 本当の神をカインに享受して欲しかったのです。
God loved Cain. 神はカインを愛しました。
And so God wanted Cain to be filled with His love. ですから神の愛でカインが満たされるよう望まれました。
So, now it is time for the second part of our Bible quiz. そこで 聖書に関わる二つ目の質問です；
Here is the question: これがその質問です；
What is the most important commandment in the Bible? 聖書の中で最も大切な戒めとは何ですか？
Answer: 答え：
"`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' ; and, `Love your neighbor as yourself.' " (Luke 10:27) 「『心を尽くし、思いを尽くし、力を尽くし、知性を尽くして、あなたの神である主を愛せよ』、また『あなたの隣人をあなた自身のように愛せよ』とあります。」（ルカ１０章２７節）
God wanted Cain to love Him. 神はカインが神を愛するよう望まれました。
But you can’t pour something out of an empty vessel. しかし空の容器からは何も注ぐことは出来ません。
So Cain had to first of all receive God’s gift of love himself. ですからカインはまず自ら神の贈り物を受けなければなりませんでした。
And it is the same with us. 私たちの場合も同じです。
What do you see when you look in the mirror? 鏡を見ると何が見えますか？
Take a look inside the bag that you carry. あなたが持ち運んでいるカバンの中を見てください。
Do you try to earn God’s favor with its contents? あなたはその中身で神の寵愛を得ようとしますか？
Is it possible that you make decisions based on those things as though you were your own god? カバンの中に在る物を拠り所としてあたかもあなたが自分自身の神であるかのごとく自分で決めたりしていませんか？
Receiving our Creator God’s love, being covered by the Lord God’s glory, starts with knowing that we ourselves are, from the beginning, empty of it. 私たちの創造主であられる神の愛を受けること、そして主なる神の栄光によって覆われる事は 私達自身にはもともとそれが無いと認めることから始まります。
We do lean on our own understanding. 私達はどうしても自分自身の悟りに頼ります。
But God wants us to know so much that He loves us, even though we have nothing righteous to offer Him. しかし、私達には神に捧げるべき義なる物が何も無いにもかかわらず神は私達のことを愛して下さっていることを悟るよう切に望んでおられます。
God wants us to know Him for who He really is. ありのままの真実の神を知るよう望んでおられます。
So, instead of living our lives striving to find our own purpose and meaning in life; ですからこの世での自分の目的や意味を懸命に見つけようとして人生を送る かわりに、
Instead of trying to create our own righteousness; また自分の義を造り出そうと努力するかわりに、
God wants us to receive that purpose and meaning, and to receive that righteousness. 神は私達があの目的と意味そしてあの義をただ受け取ることを望んでおられます。
How? どのような方法で？
By knowing Him, by enjoying Him, by delighting in Him. それは神を知り、神を享受し、神を喜ぶことによってです。
God reminded Cain that He, God, had already done what was required for Cain to receive God’s glory. 神はカインが神の栄光を受けるために必要だったことを既になされたことを彼に気付かせようとしました。
Cain only had to make the decision to thank God for it. カインはそのことを神に感謝する決心をするだけでよかったのです。
That is what Abel had done. アベルはそうしました。
Abel looked to God. アベルは神に目を向けました。
And that, friends, is why God declared Abel to be righteous. そして、みなさん、だからこそ神はアベルを義と認められたのです。
But instead, Cain looked at his brother. ところがカインは神に目を向けず弟を見ました。
And he looked at himself. そして自分を見ました。
What Cain did was a tragedy on many levels. カインのしたことはいろんな意味で悲劇でした。 It is a tragedy because it misrepresented who God really is. まず、神の真の姿を偽って表したこと
If only Cain had received God’s gift of grace, he would have understood just how much God really did love him. もしカインが神の恵みの賜物を受け取ってさえいれば、神がどれほど自分の事を真剣に愛して下さっていたかが分かった事でしょう。
It is also a tragedy because Cain missed the chance to share God’s love with his brother. また カインが神の愛を弟と分かち合う機会を失ったことも悲劇でした。
If only Cain had received God’s gift of grace, he would have also understood that Abel had also simply done exactly the same thing. カインが神の恵みの賜物を受け取ってさえいれば、アベルもただ同じことをしただけだったことが彼にも分かったことでしょう。
And if they both knew that about each other, how great would their mutual joy and appreciation have been!! そしてもし二人がお互いについてそのことを知っていたら 二人の喜びと感謝の気持ちはどんなに大いなるものだったことでしょう。
How great their love for God; 神への愛がいかにおおいなるものだったか、
And how great their love for each other! そしてお互いへの愛はいかばかりだったか！
The greatest commandment fulfilled. そうだったとしたら、最も大切な戒めは守られていた事でしょう。
God seeks for us to fulfil this commandment too. 神は 私達にもこの戒めを心に抱いて護ることを求めておられます。
God desires for us to reflect His own glory in our lives. 神は私たちの命の中に神の栄光を表すように望んでおられます。
And He offers us His perfect and unconditional love that we may be filled to do so. そうすることで私達の心が満たされるように神の完全で無条件の愛を私達に与えて下さいます。
It is a decision for us to make every time we look in the mirror. それは鏡を見るたびに私たち自身が決断すべきことなのです。
