Psalm 23:1-6 1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Before I got married, I was living in an apartment in Kyoto. 結婚する前、私は京都でアパートに住んでいました。
So when Yuri and I got married, Yuri moved into the apartment with me. ですので、ゆりと結婚した時に、ゆりがそのアパートに引っ越して来ました。
Now, I am sure that you know that first impressions are important. みなさん、第一印象は大切ですよね。
But Yuri’s first impression of the apartment was of shock. でもそのアパートに対してのゆりの第一印象は衝撃的でした。
It was not because the apartment was messy. それは、アパートが散らかっていたからではありません。
It was not because it was full of junk. ガラクタでいっぱいだったからでもありません。
It was actually because there was no mess. 実は散らかっていなかったからなのです。
There was no junk. ガラクタなんてありませんでした。
In fact, there was hardly anything in it at all. 実際のところ、ほとんど何もなかったのです。
That was 21 years ago now. 今から２１年前のことですが
But from memory, I had a futon, a fridge, a TV, a small bookshelf, and an even smaller dresser with a few dishes in it. 私の記憶では、布団と冷蔵庫とテレビと小さな本棚とそれよりも小さな食器棚にお皿が２,３枚入っていただけでした。
How could I have lived there for six years and had so little? どうやって私はたったそれだけのもので６年も暮らしていられたのでしょう？
Well, there was a simple reason. 理由は簡単です。
I had already moved to and from Japan several times; 私は何回も日本へ、また日本から引っ越しをしていました。
I always thought that sometime in the near future, I would be going to move again. いつも、またそのうち引っ越すだろうと思っていました。
I didn’t feel like I belonged permanently in Japan. 日本にずっと居るとは思っていませんでした。
But at the same time, each time I returned to Australia, I knew that I would be returning to Japan again before too long. ですが同時に、オーストラリアに帰る時はいつでも、またいくらもしないうちに日本に帰って来るんだろうなと思っていました。
As a result, I was never able to settle in either place. 結果的に、私はどちらにも落ち着くことができませんでした。
I never felt that I belonged completely in either place. どちらも自分のちゃんとした居場所とは思えませんでした。
So instead of being like a home, my Kyoto apartment was like a hotel room. ですから京都のアパートは、家というよりホテル(の部屋)のようなものでした。
Of course, that all changed when I got married. 当然、結婚したらそれは全く変わりました。
Even though we would soon be moving to back again to Australia to live, all kinds of things suddenly started appearing in cupboards, and on shelves and walls. すぐにオーストラリアに引越すことになっていたのに、急に色々なものが食器棚や棚や壁に出現し始めました。
That empty apartment quickly underwent a radical transformation. あの寂しかったアパートはあっという間に姿を変えました。
And to be honest, the transformation made that apartment look good! 正直、そのアパートは姿を変えてとても素敵になりました。
Even though we would not be in it for long, that apartment had become much more like a home. その後、あまり長く住むことはなかったのですが、そのアパートは前よりずっと家らしくなりました。
We have recently been reading through Psalm 23 together. 最近私たちは詩篇２３篇を一緒に読んできています。
Today we are looking at verse six. 今日は６節を見て行こうと思います。
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm 23:6) まことに、私のいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、私を追って来るでしょう。私は、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。（詩篇２３篇６節）
This is the climax of this short Psalm. これはこの短い詩篇のクライマックスです。
In fact, for David, it is the natural outcome of what he has already declared in verses 1 through 5. ダビデにとっては、これは１節から５節を通して彼がすでに語っていたことの当然の結果です。
This is a very short psalm, so let's look quickly at it once more: とても短い詩篇ですのでもう一度読んでみましょう。
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 【主】は私の羊飼い。私は、乏しいことがありません。 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 主は私を緑の牧場に伏させ、いこいの水のほとりに伴われます。 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 主は私のたましいを生き返らせ、御名のために、私を義の道に導かれます。 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. たとい、死の陰の谷を歩くことがあっても、私はわざわいを恐れません。あなたが私とともにおられますから。あなたのむちとあなたの杖、それが私の慰めです。 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Verse six is David’s conclusion. ６節はダビデの結論です。
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. まことに、私のいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、私を追って来るでしょう。私は、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。（詩篇２３篇６節）
Here, the word translated as “love” can also be translated as “mercy.” ここで「恵み」（英語では「love」）という言葉は「憐れみ」（英語で「mercy」）とも訳すことができます。
David declares this is an absolute, unchangeable fact. ダビデは、これは絶対的な、変わることのない事実だと言っています。
This word "surely" is actually a word that we often hear and use ourselves. この「まことに」という言葉は、実は私たち自身がよく聞いたり、使ったりする言葉です。
And it is a word that Jesus used whenever he was about to say something really important. そして、イエス様が何かとても大事なことを語ろうとした時によく使われた言葉でもあります。
Whenever Jesus declared a crucial truth, he would start by saying "surely."
イエス様は重大な真理を語られる時はいつも、「まことに」という言葉で始められました。
And Jesus would emphasis something that was really, really, really critical by starting with “Surely, surely!” そして、何か、本当に本当に本当に重大な真理を語ろうとされた時には、「まことにまことに」と言って強調されました。
This is actually the same word that we use at the end of a prayer. これは実はお祈りの最後に使うのと同じ言葉なのです。
It means “amen.” 「アーメン」という意味です。
So, when someone says a prayer, at the end, we say “amen” to mean “that’s right!” “Surely that is right!” ですから、誰かが祈る時、私たちは「それはまことにその通りです」という意味で「アーメン」と言います。
Jesus would begin teaching an important truth by saying “Amen, amen!” イエス様は重大な真理を教えるのに、「アーメン、アーメン」と言って始められたのです。
“What I am about to say to you is a very important, critical, truth.” 「私が今からあなた方に教えることはとても、極めて重大な真理だよ」という意味でした。
And in the same way, when David concludes this psalm, he declares from the beginning that what he is about to say is the truth. 同じように、ダビデはこの詩編を結ぶにあたって、これから語ることは真実だと言っているのです。
It is a very critical truth. 極めて重大な真実です。
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. まことに、私のいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと哀れみとが、私を追って来るでしょう。私は、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。（詩篇２３篇６節）
Goodness and mercy. 慈しみと哀れみ。
Those two things would always be with David. この２つはいつもダビデと共にあります。
This is an absolute, critical truth. それは絶対的な、極めて重大な真実です。
Goodness and mercy would always follow David. 慈しみと哀れみがいつもダビデを追ってくるのです。
In good times and in bad. 時が良くても、悪くても。
In sickness and in health. 病の時にも、健康な時にも。
Goodness and health would always be with David. 慈しみと哀れみはいつもダビデと共にあります。
Goodness supplies our needs. 慈しみは私たちの必要を満たします。
Mercy blots out our sins. 哀れみは私たちの罪を消し去ります。
David knew as a fact that the Lord, who was his shepherd, would always supply his needs: ダビデは、自分の羊飼いである主がいつも自分の必要を満たしてくださるのは真実だ、と知っていました。
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 【主】は私の羊飼い。私は、乏しいことがありません。
And David experienced the peace of knowing that the Lord was always there to rescue, forgive, heal, and restore him from his sin, and from the consequences of sin. そして、主はいつも自分の罪とその結果から、自分を救い、赦し、癒し、回復させてくださると知ることで、ダビデは平安の中にいました。
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 主は私のたましいを生き返らせ、御名のために、私を義の道に導かれます。
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. たとい、死の陰の谷を歩くことがあっても、私はわざわいを恐れません。あなたが私とともにおられますから。あなたのむちとあなたの杖、それが私の慰めです。
Why could David receive the blessings of the Lord’s goodness and mercy? なぜダビデは主の慈しみと哀れみの祝福を受けることができたのでしょうか？
Because the Lord was David’s shepherd.
それは主がダビデの羊飼いだったからです。
We previously looked at many aspects of the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep. 以前ここで、羊飼いと羊とのさまざまな関係について見ました。
But the one thing I want to consider in the context of verse 6 of this psalm is that without the help of the shepherd, a lost sheep would stay lost. ですが、この詩編の６節において今考えたいことは、羊飼いの助けがなければ、群れから離れてしまった羊はいつまでもそのままだということです。
Sheep just don’t have the ability to become “unlost.” 羊には自分で元のところに帰ることができません。
David was the best known and most loved and revered king of Israel. ダビデはイスラエルで最も愛され、尊敬されていた王でした。
But David knew that he was 100% dependent on the Lord for absolutely everything. ですがダビデは、すべてのことにおいて１００％主が頼りであるということをちゃんと知っていました。
Even though David was king over Israel; ダビデは王としてイスラエルを治めていましたが、
He surrendered himself to God’s care. 自分自身を神様の助けに委ねていました。
God was lord over David. 神様がダビデの主でした。
The Lord was David’s shepherd. 主がダビデの羊飼いでした。
In every aspect of David’s life, David knew that the goodness and mercy of the Lord would follow him all the days of his life. ダビデは自分の人生のすべてにおいて、主の慈しみと哀れみが自分を追ってくることを知っていました。
Do you see the gospel – the truth - of God’s good news for us here? ここに福音、私たちのための神様のよい知らせの真実があることに気づかれたでしょうか？
David didn’t have to chase after goodness and mercy. ダビデは神様の慈しみと哀れみを追いかける必要はありませんでした。
He didn’t have to work hard to try to earn it. それを手に入れるために頑張る必要もなかったのです。
David knew that he was like a sheep. ダビデは自分が羊のようなものだと知っていました。
He just wasn’t able to do it himself. どうしても自分では無理でした。
But, nevertheless, the Lord’s goodness and mercy would always follow David. それでも、主の慈しみと哀れみはいつもダビデを追ってくるでしょう。
Even if David strayed from the Lord, the Lord’s goodness and mercy would chase him down. たとえ、ダビデが主から離れていたとしても、主の慈しみと哀れみはダビデを追いかけてくるでしょう。
It would pursue David, until, in all of his fear and filth, he surrendered himself again; ダビデが恐れや汚れを抱えたまま、もう一度主に自分を委ねるまで，それはダビデを追いかけてくるでしょう。
It would pursue David until David allowed the Lord to once more restore his soul in green pastures and by quiet waters. ダビデがもう一度主に自分の魂を緑の牧場やいこいの水のほとりで生き返らせてもらうまで、追いかけてくるでしょう。
This is the gospel - the good news that God brings to us. これが福音です、神様が私たちにくださる良い知らせです。
The Lord God loves you so much. 主なる神様はあなたを本当に愛しておられます。
He loves us so much that he will pursue you. あなたを追いかけるほどに愛しておられます。
He will pursue you with his goodness. ご自分の慈しみをもってあなたを追って来られます。
He will pursue you with his mercy. ご自分の哀れみをもってあなたを追って来られます。
He is like the woman who up turns everything in her house until she tries to find a lost coin. 神様はなくした銀貨を見つけるまで家中を念入りに探すあの女性のようです。
He is like the Shepherd who personally knows and cares for each sheep individually. 自分の羊を一匹一匹よく知っていて、世話をしているあの羊飼いのようです。
So that, even though he has many, many sheep; その羊飼いには、沢山、たくさんの羊がいるのにも関わらず、
If even one of those sheep gets lost, he will not write it off. たとえ、一匹の羊でも迷子になったら、仕方ないと諦めることはしません。
No. He will go and search for that sheep until he finds it. そうです。その羊が見つかるまで探し歩きます。
And then he will lovingly and carefully carry that sheep back on his own back. そして見つかったら、優しく、丁寧に自分の背中にその羊を背負って連れて帰るのです。
Jesus tells us that He is the Good Shepherd. イエス様はご自身が良い羊飼いだと言っておられます。
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11) わたしは、良い牧者です。良い牧者は羊のためにいのちを捨てます。（ヨハネ１０章１１節）
Jesus, the Good Shepherd protects His sheep. 良い羊飼いであるイエス様はご自分の羊を守ってくださいます。
Jesus, the Good Shepherd provides goodness for His sheep. 良い羊飼いであるイエス様はご自分の羊に慈しみをお与えになります。
And Jesus, the Good Shepherd provides mercy for His sheep. そして、良い羊飼いであるイエス様はご自分の羊に哀れみをお与えになります。
He provides true life for His sheep. ご自分の羊のにまことの命をお与えになります。
He pursues and protects His beloved sheep with goodness and mercy. 慈しみと哀れみを持ってご自分の愛する羊を追いかけ、守ってくださいます。
In the new Testament, Paul teaches us this truth in Romans chapter 8. 新約聖書のローマ人への手紙８章でパウロはこの真理を教えています。 He says:
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. しかし、私たちは、私たちを愛してくださった方によって、これらすべてのことの中にあっても、圧倒的な勝利者となるのです。 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 私はこう確信しています。死も、いのちも、御使いも、権威ある者も、今あるものも、後に来るものも、力ある者も、 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39)
高さも、深さも、そのほかのどんな被造物も、私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある神の愛から、私たちを引き離すことはできません。ローマ８章３７節〜３９節。） This is the good news, the gospel, that the Lord God speaks to us here through David. これが、今日ダビデを通して主なる神様が私たちに教えてくださっている福音、良い知らせです。
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. まことに、私のいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、私を追って来るでしょう。私は、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。（詩篇２３篇６節）
Surely goodness and mercy will follow (you) all the days of (your) life, and (you) will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. まことに、あなたのいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、あなたを追って来るでしょう。あなたは、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。（詩篇２３篇６節）
If you know the Lord Jesus as your Shepherd, surely goodness and mercy will pursue you all the days of your life. もしあなたが主イエスを自分の羊飼いとして知る（知っている）なら、まことに、あなたのいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、あなたを追って来るでしょう。
If you know the Lord Jesus as your Shepherd: もしあなたが主イエスを自分の羊飼いとして知る（知っている）なら、
You shall not be in want; あなたには乏しいことがありません。
You will be given rest in green pastures, by quiet waters; あなたは緑の牧場や憩いの水のほとりで安らぎを与えられます。
Your soul will be restored; あなたの魂は生き返らせられ
You will be guarded in paths of righteousness, and you will see the glory of God; あなたは義の道に導かれ、主の栄光を仰ぎ見ることができるようになるでしょう。
You will intimately know the security, peace and hope that comes from being fully protected; 自分が完全に守られていることからくる安心や平安や希望を心の底から知るでしょう。
And you will experience the satisfaction and the joy of knowing that your security is absolutely assured in every possible circumstance. そして、どんな時でも自分の安全が絶対的に確保されていることを知ることによって心の満たしや喜びを体験するでしょう。
Surely goodness and mercy will follow (you) all the days of (your) life, and (you) will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. まことに、あなたのいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、あなたを追って来るでしょう。あなたは、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。（詩篇２３篇６節）
All the days of your life! あなたのいのち日の限り、です。
So, how many days of your life are there? さて、あなたの命は全部で何日ぐらいでしょうか？
How many days do you have left? あと何日残っているでしょうか？
That can be a scary thought. 考えるとちょっと怖くなるかもしれませんね！
But the amazing grace of God's gospel, the good news for us, is that the answer is not limited to our time here now. 答えは、私たちの持ち時間には限界がない、です。それが神様の福音、良い知らせの驚くばかりのめぐみなのです。
As we just read from Paul, not even death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. 先ほどパウロが書いていたように、死でさえも私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある神の愛から、私たちを引き離すことはできません。 So, when David declared: ですから、ダビデはこう言いました：
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. まことに、私のいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、私を追って来るでしょう。私は、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。（詩篇２３篇６節）
He was rejoicing in this truth, the unchangeable, amazing truth: ダビデは、この変わることのない、驚くべき真実を喜んでいたのです。
God’ goodness and loving mercy would continue to surround him; 神様の慈しみと哀れみが絶えず彼を包み、
It would continue to bless him; 絶えず彼を祝福し、
It would continue to fill him with the satisfaction and joy of true life; まことの命を持っていることの充足感や喜びで絶えず彼を満たします。
It would continue forever - eternally! そしてそれはいつまでも、永遠に続くのです。
David knew where his eternal dwelling was. ダビデは自分の永遠の住まいがどこにあるのかよく知っていました。
David had the absolute assuredness that he would live in the house of the LORD forever, eternally. ダビダは、自分はいつまでも、永遠に主の家に住むという絶対的な確信を持っていました。
It was the Lord's house. それは主の家でした。
Who lives in the Lord's house? 主の家には誰が住んでいるのでしょう？
Okay, let me ask you: では、皆さんにお聞きします。
Who lives in your house? あなたの家には誰が住んでいますか？
You do, of course! もちろんあなたですね。
So, who lives in the Lord's house? では、主の家に住んでいるのは誰でしょう。
Of course, the Lord does. もちろん、主です。
So David is affirming that his life was eternal. だから、ダビデは、自分の命は永遠だと断言しているのです。
He would live this life in the Lord God's house. 主の家で、その命を生きるのです。
He would live this life forever, together with God. いつまでも、神様と一緒に生きていくのです。
And the reason that David is able to say this; ダビデがこのように言うことができたのは
The reason that he has this absolute, unshakeable conviction この絶対的で揺るがない確信を持つことができたのは
Is that David utterly surrendered himself to God as though he himself were a sheep. まるで羊のように、自分の全てを完全に神様に委ねていたからです。
He completely received God as Lord over his life. 彼は、完全に神様を自分のいのち、自分の人生の主として受け入れていました。
The Lord was David's shepherd. 主はダビデの羊飼いでした。
David had learned to trust the Lord as his Shepherd throughout the trials of his life. ダビデは人生の試練を通して主を自分の羊飼いとして信頼することを学んでいたのです。
In good times and in bad. 時がよくても、悪くても、
In sickness and in health. 病の時も、健康な時にも。
David learned that the Lord's goodness and mercy were always with him. ダビデは主の慈しみと哀れみがいつも自分と共にあったことを学びました。
God’s goodness was always there supplying his needs. 神様の慈しみはいつも彼の必要を満たすものでした。
God’s mercy was always available to blot out his sins. 彼の罪を消し去るために、いつも神様の哀れみが与えられていました。
The more that David experienced the Lord as his shepherd in the midst of his present life; 地上の人生の中で、主を自分の羊飼いとして経験すればするほど
The more he learned he could trust the Lord with his eternal life. 永遠の命において主を信頼することができるようになるということをダビデは学びました。
Twenty one years ago, my empty apartment was transformed into a home. ２１年前、寂しかったアパートは家へと姿を変えました。
And now, we have been blessed with a beautiful house. そして今私たちには、感謝なことに素敵な家が与えられています。
When we returned to Japan, I never dreamt that we would ever be able to have a house ourselves. 日本に帰ってきた時、自分たちの家を持つことができるなんて夢にも思いませんでした。
But not only do we have a beautiful house, it is filled with treasured antiques that have been in the family for generations. しかも、素敵な家を持てただけではなくて、その家は代々受け継いできたアンティークでいっぱいです。
I am still amazed to wake up each morning, and to go home each evening to our home. 毎朝その家で起きて、また、夜その家に帰って来ることは未だに私にとっては驚き、感動です。
But that means nothing to me compared to the amazing, unchangeable truth of living in the house of the Lord, together with the Lord, forever. けれど、永遠に主の家に、主と共に住むという驚くべき、変わることのない真実と比べたら、取るに足らないことです。。
I am convinced that this is where God has planted my family now. 神様が私たち家族をこの地においてくださった、と私は確信しています。
Maybe our situation will change in the future. 将来的に状況は変わるかもしれませんが、
But in everything that has happened in our lives for us to be here now: 今日私たちがこうなるために、私たちの人生の中に起こった全てのことにおいて、
In good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, 時がよくても、悪くても、病の時にも、健康な時にも、
The Lord has continued to shepherd us. 主が私たちをずっと羊飼いのように導いてくださったのです。
His goodness and mercy have continued to follow us. 主の慈しみと哀れみがずっと私たちを追ってきてくださったのです。
Therefore, I have the absolute conviction that no matter what happens here now; だから、今、ここで、たとえ、どんなことが起ころうとも、私には絶対的な確信があります。
No matter what enemies might confront me; たとえ、どんな敵が現れても、
And even if I should walk through the valley of the shadow of death; もし、死の陰の谷を歩くことがあっても、
I do not need to fear evil. 私はわざわいを恐れる必要はありません。
Surely the Lord's goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life; まことに、私のいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、私を追って来るでしょう。
Surely I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. まことに、私は、いつまでも、【主】の家に住まいましょう。
Do you know the Lord Jesus as your shepherd? あなたは主を自分の羊飼いだと知っていますか？
David challenges us to undergo a radical transformation ダビデは私たちに根本から変化を遂げるようにと投げかけています。
To utterly surrender your own life to the Lord God, and therefore to receive his eternal life into yourself. それは、自分の人生、命を完全に神様に委ね、その結果として、主の永遠の命を自分の中に受け入れるということです。
He will make us “unlost!” 主は私たちを居るべきところに導いてくださいます。

Surely goodness and mercy will follow (you) all the days of (your) life, まことに、（あなた）のいのちの日の限り、いつくしみと恵みとが、（あなた）を追って来るでしょう。
Surely (you) will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
