Full of Grace and Truth
恵みとまことに満ちておられる
John 4:4-9
ヨハネ４章4節〜9節

Today, I want to start looking together at one of my favourite parts of the Bible.
今日は私の大好きな聖書の箇所からご一緒に見ていきたいと思います。

It is a very well known passage.
とても有名なお話です。

It focuses on a meeting between Jesus and a Samaritan woman.
イエス様とサマリアの女の出会いを取り上げています。

This event is recorded in John Chapter 4.
このできごとはヨハネの4章に書かれています。

But before we look at this story, I want to turn our attention to how John introduces Jesus at the beginning of his gospel.
ですがこの話を見ていく前に、ヨハネが福音書の最初の所でどのようにイエス様を紹介しているかにまずは注目したいと思います。

I want to spend a couple of moments looking at the characteristics of Jesus that John describes here.
ヨハネがここで述べているイエス様の特質についてしばらく見ていきましょう。

This is so important because it teaches us some very important, fundamental aspects of who Jesus is.
これはとても大切なことです、イエス様が誰なのかということについてとても重要ないくつかの見方を私達に教えているからです。

And based on who he is, it teaches us why Jesus does what he does.
そしてイエス様が誰なのかを踏まえて、どうしてイエス様がイエス様のすることをするのか、を教えています。

In other words, Jesus does what he does because of who he is.
つまり、イエス様がイエス様だから、イエス様のすることをするのです。

We need to understand this about Jesus for two reasons:
私達は二つの理由からイエス様についてこのことを知る必要があります。

The first reason is that it gives us the meaning of Jesus’ meeting with the Samaritan woman.
第一の理由は、それによってイエス様とサマリアの女との出会いの意味が分かるからです。

The second reason is that it teaches us about Jesus meeting with us.
第二の理由は、それがイエス様と私達との出会いについても教えてくれるからです。

So let's look at what John says about Jesus at the beginning of his gospel.
では、ヨハネが福音書の最初に、イエス様について何を言っているのか見ていきましょう。

In chapter 1, versus 14 and 16, John records:
一章の14節16節にヨハネはこう書いています。

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
ことばは人となって、私たちの間に住まわれた。私たちはこの方の栄光を見た。父のみもとから来られたひとり子としての栄光である。この方は恵みとまことに満ちておられた。
From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. (John 1:16)
私たちはみな、この方の満ち満ちた豊かさの中から、恵みの上にさらに恵みを受けたのである。

Verse 14 begins telling us that Jesus came to live in this world, together with us, as a human being.
14節ではイエス様がこの世界に来て、私達人間と一緒に住まわれたと言っています。

Without going into further detail, this means that the Creator of absolutely everything, that exists entered into his own creation.
詳しいことは省きますが、これはすべてのものの造り主がご自分の創られた物の中で生きておられる、という意味です。

Eternal God, who is spirit, clothed himself in mortal flesh.
霊である永遠の神様が、死ぬべき肉体を着ておられるたのです。

And he did that in order to be together with us.
神様は私達と共に生きるためにそうされました。

So John declares this experience;
それでヨハネはこの経験を伝えているのです

this very personal and intimate experience;
このとても個人的で親密な経験を

this life changing experience,
人生を変える経験を。

of having come face-to-face with God.
神様と直接出会うという経験を、です。

And then John further explains what he saw in Jesus.
そしてヨハネはさらに彼がイエス様の中に何を見たかを説明しています。

John tells us what it was like to come face-to-face with God.
神様と直接出会うとはどういうことかを述べています。

John reveals his experience of, through Jesus, being together with the eternal creator.
イエス様を通して、永遠の創り主と共に居る、という経験について語っています。

He tells us that Jesus was: "full of grace and truth."
イエス様は「恵みとまことに満ちておられた。」といっています。

God chose to enter into this world.
神様はこの世界に来ることを選ばれました。

He did this in Jesus.
イエス様を通してそうされました。

Jesus came to reveal to us who God really is.
イエス様は私達に神様が本当はどういう方なのかを明らかにするために来られました。

He did this so that we would personally know who God really is.
私達が自分自身で、神様が本当はどういう方なのかを知るために。

He did this so that we would personally know God himself.
私達が自分自身で、神様ご自身を知るために。

He did this so that we ourselves could personally be together with God.
私達自身が神様と親しく共にあるために。

God is full of grace and truth.
神様は恵みとまことに満ちておられます。

Jesus came into this world full of grace and truth.
イエス様は恵みとまことに満ちて、この世界に来られました。

Jesus came to reveal, to offer, this grace and truth to us.
イエス様は恵みとまことを示し、差し出すために来られました。

Now, before we turn to the story, there is one further thing that I want to draw our attention to.
さて、本題に入る前に、もう一つ見ておきたいことがあります。

A little later in John's Gospel, Jesus declared: “…the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
ヨハネの福音書のもう少し後の所で、イエス様は「真理はあなたがたを自由にします。」と言っておられます。
Jesus came to reveal his grace and truth to us so that this truth will set us free.
イエス様は私達に恵みとまこと、真理、を示し、それによって私達が自由になるために来られたのです。

Knowing the truth, believing the truth, experiencing the truth, will set us free.
真理を知り、信じ、体験することは私達を自由にします。

And this deliverance is made possible because of God’s grace.
そして、神様の恵みによって、このように解放されることができるのです。

In other words, God came into this world;
つまり、神様はこの世界に来られました

God revealed the truth about himself;
神様はご自身についての真理を明らかにされました

God reveals the truth about us;
私達についての真理も明らかにされました

so that we could be together with him.
それによって、私達は神様と共に居ることができるのです。

This is the truth.
これこそが真理です。

And he did this completely out of his grace.
そして恵みによって完全にこれを成し遂げられました。

So, let's turn to John chapter 4 and look at this meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan woman.
では、ヨハネ4章に戻って、イエス様とサマリアの女の出会いについて見ていきましょう。

The meeting took place at a well.
この出会いの場所は井戸でした。

The well was located outside of a village in Samaria.
この井戸はサマリアのある村の外にありました。

Jesus was travelling with his disciples.
イエス様は弟子達と旅の途中でした。

They were going from Judea to Galilee.
彼らはユダヤからガリラヤに向かう所でした。

At this time Israel was divided into two parts.
その頃、イスラエルは二つに分かれていました。

Judea was in the south and Galilee was in the north.
ユダヤはその南の方にあって、ガリラヤは北の方にありました。

But these two regions were separated by Samaria.
そしてこの二つの地域はサマリアによって隔てられていました。

Samaria had become an independent country after it was captured by the Assyrians in 722 BC.
サマリアは紀元前722年にアッシリヤに占領されたあと、独立国になっていました。

Samaria was originally part of the Northern Kingdom of Israel;
サマリアはもともとイスラエルの北王国の一部でした。

But when the Assyrians invaded, they deported all the educated and skilled Israelites away;
ですが、アッシリヤに侵略され、その時、教育があり技術を持ったイスラエル人は追放されてしまいました。

And in their place the Assyrians filled the land with foreigners who were forced to marry together with the remaining Israelites.
アッシリヤ人は、彼らの代わりに違う国の人達を連れてきて、残されていたイスラエル人と強制的に結婚させ、その場所に住まわせました。

This is not only affected that so-called racial purity of those Israelites in Samaria, it also influenced their faith and culture.
このことはサマリアのイスラエル人達のいわゆる血筋の純粋さに影響したただけではなく、彼らの信仰や文化にも影響を及ぼしました。

Therefore, when the exiled Jews of the Southern Kingdom were eventually able to return to their homeland, there was bitter animosity between the Jews and the Samaritans.
そういうわけで、追放されていた南王国のユダヤ人達がやっと彼らの母国に帰って来られた時、そこにはユダヤ人とサマリア人の間にはげしい憎しみがありました。

Eventually in 400 BC the Samaritans erected a rival temple and priesthood system.
紀元前400年にサマリア人はとうとう、ユダヤ人のものとは違う神殿と祭司の組織を作っててしまいました。

The Jews saw the Samaritans as being political rebels, religious heretics, and racially defiled.
ユダヤ人はサマリア人を政治的には反逆者、信仰的には異端、人種的にはけがれたものとして見ていました。

And so the Jews would avoid any kind of contact with the Samaritans at all cost.
それで、ユダヤ人はサマリア人とのどのような接触をも避けるようになりました。

Therefore, when Jews would travel between Judea and Galilee, they would go to great efforts to go around Samaria.
そういうわけですから、ユダヤ人はユダヤとガリラヤの間を旅しようとする時、わざわざサマリアを迂回して行きました。

It was a longer journey.
旅はより長くなりました。

It was more difficult and more dangerous.
より困難で危険になりました。
However, the Jews would choose to experienced physical discomfort and danger to their physical selves;
それでもユダヤの人達は、肉体的には辛く危険な思いをする方を選びました。

because they believed that having contact with the Samaritans would cause them to become spiritually defiled.
なぜなら、彼らはサマリア人とかかわる事で霊的に穢れてしまうと信じていたからです。

So it is startling to read that when Jesus travelled from Judea to Galilee, he actually went through Samaria.
ですから、イエス様がユダヤからガリラヤへ旅した時に実際にサマリアを通って行ったというのは驚きです。

In fact, John emphasises that's Jesus "had to go through Samaria."
事実、ヨハネは「サマリヤを通っていかなければならなかった」と強調しています。

Why did Jesus" have to go through Samaria"?
なぜイエス様は「サマリヤを通っていかなければならなかった」のでしょう？

It was not because of any roadworks or public transport strike.
道路工事のせいでも、公共交通機関のストライキのせいでもありません。

It was not because of anything external forcing Jesus to change his mind or change his plans.
何か外からの力によって強制的にイエス様が考えや計画を変えたわけではありません。

John includes the information that Jesus "had to go through Samaria" because he is emphasising that this journey through Samaria was in fact part of Jesus’ plan.
ヨハネはイエス様が「サマリヤを通っていかなければならなかった」と言うことで、このサマリアを通っていく旅が実際にイエス様の計画の一部だったとも言っているのです。

Jesus had a reason to go through Samaria.
イエス様にはサマリアを通る理由がありました。

This reason directly reflected Jesus’ identity and his purpose.
この理由は、イエス様の特質とイエス様の目的とをはっきりとあらわしていました。

It reveals the truth about who Jesus is.
イエス様とは誰なのか、ということについての真理をあらわしていました。

Jesus did what he did because of who he is.
イエス様がイエス様であるから、そのことをされたのです。

Jesus is full of truth and grace.
イエス様は恵みとまことに満ちておられます。

And in His grace, Jesus "had to go through Samaria."
そしてその恵みによって、イエス様は「サマリヤを通っていかなければならなかった」のです。

Now, as he travelled through Samaria, he came to Jacob’s well.
さて、イエス様がサマリアを旅していると、ヤコブの井戸の所にやって来ました。

Let's look at verses 5 and 6:
5節6節を見てみましょう。

So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. (John 4:5)

それで主は、ヤコブがその子ヨセフに与えた地所に近いスカルというサマリヤの町に来られた。

Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. (John 4:6)

そこにはヤコブの井戸があった。イエスは旅の疲れで、井戸のかたわらに腰をおろしておられた。時は六時ごろであった。

The sixth hour here does not mean 6 o'clock.
この6時というのは、今の6時とは意味が違います。

It refers to the sixth hour starting from sunrise.
日の出から6番目の時間、ということを表しています。

In other words, when Jesus stopped at the well it was 12 noon.
つまり、イエス様が井戸に立ち寄られたのは昼の12時ごろです。

It was hot.
暑く

It was dry.
乾燥していました。

Jesus had been walking through this desert like region.
イエス様はこの砂漠のようなところを歩いて来られました。

He was tired from his journey.
旅に疲れておられました。

And he chose Jacob’s well as the place where he would find rest. ( I have food…)
そしてヤコブの井戸で休むことにしました。

Sychar was not his final destination.
スカルは最終的な目的地ではありませんでした。

Jesus was headed for Galilee.
イエス様はガリラヤに向かっていました。

But he chose to go through Samaria.
でもサマリアを通ることを選ばれました。

It was in his plan to go via Sychar.
スカルを通ることもその計画のうちでした。

It was his purpose to stop at that well.
その井戸に立ち寄ることが目的だったのです。

In fact, the original wording states that Jesus actually sat on the well.
実際、もともとの表現では、イエス様は井戸の上に座られた、とあります。

If you can imagine, a well is it deep hole with the stone wall built up around the edge.
ご存知のように、井戸は周りに石の壁がある深い穴です。

And as Jesus has gone and sat right on that wall.
そしてイエス様は行って、その壁の上に座られました。

Jesus sat in a place where he could not be missed.
イエス様は目立つ所に座っていました。

No. Jesus sat where he could not be avoided.
というか、絶対に避けられないような所に座っていたのです。

Jesus was not only making himself available for the meeting with this Samaritan woman;
イエス様はサマリアの女との出会いを求めておられただけではなく

He was making certain that nothing we get in the way of it happening.
絶対にそのことを実現できるようにしておられたのです。

Moreover, although he had been travelling with his disciples, they were not with him there at the well.
そのうえ、弟子達との旅の途中だったのに、弟子達はイエス様と一緒に井戸の所には居ませんでした。

They had gone into the town to buy food.
町に食べ物を買いに行っていました。

Certainly they didn't all need to go.
全員が行く必要はありませんでした。

In fact, because they were his disciples, it would have been common sense for at least one or two of them to remain with Jesus and look after him.
それどころか、彼らはイエス様の弟子なのですから、一人か二人が残ってイエス様のお世話をするのが普通だったでしょう。

If Jesus was tired and thirsty, surely it would have been his disciples’ of responsibility to draw water from the well for him.
もしイエス様が疲れてのどが渇いていたなら、イエス様のために井戸から水を汲む、というのが弟子として当然のことだったでしょう。

However, Jesus had a purpose:
けれども、イエス様には目的がありました。

And I believe that it was not only to ensure the privacy of his meeting with the Samaritan woman.
そしてそれはサマリアの女と話をするのにプライバシーを確保するため、だけではなかったと思います。

I am convinced that Jesus sent all of his disciples into the town for both of their own benefit, and also for the benefit of the people of that town.
イエス様が弟子を全員町に行かせたのは自分達のためだけではなく、町の人達のためでもあったに違いないと私は思っています。

Then, while they were away, and Jesus was at the well by himself, a Samaritan woman came to draw water.
それから、彼らが居ない間に、イエス様がひとりで井戸の所に居ると、サマリアの女が水を汲みにやってきました。

And Jesus said to her:
そしてイエス様は彼女に言いました

"Will you give me a drink?” (John 4:7)

「わたしに水を飲ませてくれませんか（ください）。」

It was a simple question.
単純な質問です。

"Will you give me a drink?” (John 4:7)
「わたしに水を飲ませてくれませんか（ください）。」

But it was a question that reveals who Jesus is.
ですがこの質問はイエス様が誰なのかを明らかにしています。

It was a question full of grace and truth.
この質問は恵みとまことに満ちています。

I expect that many of you already know this story.
この話をすでに知っている方が多いと思いますが、

But let’s confirm a little more about the setting of this meeting.
この出会いの舞台についてもう少し確認してみましょう。

It was noon.
真昼のことでした。

It was hot and dry.
暑くて、乾燥していました。

And here was a woman, a lone, solitary woman.
そして、ひとりの女がいました。ひとりぼっちで孤独な女が。

She had come to the well to draw water.
彼女は井戸に水を汲みに来ました。

But she had gone there at the hottest time of the day.
ですが彼女は1日で一番暑い時間にそこにやって来ました。

She had gone there when it was physically the most uncomfortable.
肉体的に一番大変な時間にそこに来たのです。

Pulling up water from a deep well is hot and hard work.
深い井戸から水をくみ上げるのは暑くて大変な仕事です。

So normally, everyone would go to the well to draw water early in the morning and late in the evening.
それで普通はみんな、早朝と夕方遅くに水を汲みに行きます。

It was cool then.
それなら涼しいですし

It made the job more bearable.
仕事をするのがずっと楽です。

By the way, getting water from the well was the job of the women.
ところで、井戸から水を汲むのは女の仕事でした。

So just imagine, all the women from the village going to the well together to get water.
村中の女が一緒に井戸へ水を汲みに行っていたところを想像してください。

They are all there together.
みんなで一緒に。です

But how many people can draw water from a well at one time?
でも一度に井戸から水を汲めるのは何人でしょう？

Only one.
一人だけです。

So what did everyone else do while they waited their turn?
では自分の番を待つ間、他の人は何をしていたのでしょう？

Of course, they talked.
もちろん、おしゃべりです。

They would have talked to each other.
お互いに話しをし

And they would have talked about each other.
お互いのことを話していたでしょう。

But they would have done it together.
☆みんなで一緒にそうしていたでしょう。

That's because they belonged to each other.
彼女達はお互いに仲間だったからです。

But this woman did not belong.
でもこの女は仲間ではありませんでした。

If you know this story, you will know that this woman had a problem.
もしこの話を聞いたことがあれば、この女が問題を抱えていたことをご存知でしょう。

In fact, she had many problems.
事実、彼女には色々と問題がありました。

She was known for her problems.
彼女はその問題のせいで知られていました。

She was identified by her problems.
そういう人だと思われていました。

For everyone else in the village, this woman's problems defined her identity.
村のほかの人達にとっては、彼女といえばそのこと、そのことこそが彼女でした。

So everyone would have talked about her;
それで、みんなは彼女について噂しました

But only behind her back.
彼女からは見えない所で。

And nobody would have talked or listened to her.
そして誰も彼女に話しかけたり、彼女の話しを聞いたりはしませんでした。

That's why she was at the well in the middle of the day.
これこそが、彼女が真っ昼間に井戸に居た理由です。

It was physically tough and uncomfortable.
肉体的にはつらく、大変なことでした。

But that was better than directly facing the constant rejection of everyone else.
でも他の人達から面と向かって冷たくされるよりもましでした。

So this woman went to the well by herself in the heat.
それでこの女は暑い中、一人で井戸に行ったのです。

She was rejected - ostracised.
彼女は除け者にされていました、村八分でした。

That word is so easy to understand here!
村八分、ということばがこの話だと良く分かります。

But just as her identity has been defined by her problems and failures, Jesus identity is defined by truth and grace.
この女がどんな人物かというと－問題を起こしまちがいを犯した人であり、イエス様はどんな方というと－恵みとまことの方です。

It was a simple question:
単純な質問でした

"Will you give me a drink?” (John 4:7)
「わたしに水を飲ませてくれませんか（ください）。」

The woman was surprised - shocked.
その女は驚きました、衝撃でした。

The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. ) (John 4:9)
そこで、そのサマリヤの女は言った。「あなたはユダヤ人なのに、どうしてサマリヤの女の私に、飲み水をお求めになるのですか。」・・ユダヤ人はサマリヤ人とつきあいをしなかったからである。・・

In asking this question, Jesus broke all expectations and shattered all the rules:
こんな風に声をかけることでイエス様は、どんな予想をも裏切り、すべての習慣を打ち壊してしまいました。

He broke a centuries-old taboo.
イエス様は何世紀にも渡るタブーを破ったのです。

He went into Samaria.
イエス様はサマリアに入られました。

He sat on the well.
井戸に座り

He spoke to a Samaritan - an impure foreigner.
一人のサマリア人、けがれた異邦人、に話しかけました。

He spoke to a woman who was not his own family.
自分の身内ではない女に話しかけました。

And she was an adulteress - an unacceptable person.
そして彼女は夫ではない男性と暮らしていました、当時としては受け入れられないような人物でした。

But Jesus spoke to her.
それなのにイエス様は彼女に話し掛けました。

Jesus asked her for a drink.
水を飲ませてくれないかとたずねました

He asked to drink from her own vessel.
その女の水がめから飲ませてくれないかとたずねました。

This woman had been rejected and condemned by her peers.
この女は同じ村の人たちからのけ者にされ、非難されていました。

But as John declares to us:
ですがヨハネはこう言っています。

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:17)
神が御子を世に遣わされたのは、世をさばくためではなく、御子によって世が救われるためである。

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
神は、実に、そのひとり子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。それは御子を信じる者が、ひとりとして滅びることなく、永遠のいのちを持つためである。

This is the glory that John saw.
これこそがヨハネが見た栄光です。

God had come into the world.
神様はこの世界に来られました。

Jesus had come from the Father, full of grace and truth.
イエス様は恵みとまことに満ちた父なる神様のところから来られました。

From this grace and truth, this woman was about to receive eternal blessing.
この恵みとまことによって、この女は永遠の祝福を受けようとしていました。

The truth was about to set this woman free.
そのまこと、真理がこの女を自由にしようとしていました。

Jesus purposed to seek out that woman.
この女を見つけ出すことがイエス様の目的でした。

She was isolated, alone.
彼女はひとりぼっちで、孤独でした。

No-one associated with her:
誰も彼女の仲間になってはくれませんでした。

Not the Jews, not even her own people.
ユダヤ人はもちろん、彼女と同じサマリアの人達も。

But Jesus didn’t want her to remain isolated.
ですが、イエス様は彼女がずっとひとりぼっちで居ることを望まれませんでした。

Jesus came to do what no-one else could do.
イエス様は他の誰もできないことをするために来られました。

He came to restore this woman;
この女を取り戻すために来られました

to show her the respect of her humanity;
彼女が人間としての尊厳を示すために

to offer her care in her suffering;
苦しみの中にある女にいやしの手を差し伸べるために

to give her eternal relationship and belonging.
彼女に永遠に変わることのないつながりと居場所を与えるために。

Jesus did this because of who He is.
イエス様がイエス様なので、そうされました。

Jesus is full of grace and truth.
イエス様は恵みとまことに満ちておられます。

Jesus IS grace and truth.
イエス様こそが恵みとまこと、そのものです。

We live so far away in time and place.
私達は、この話とは違う時代、違う場所で生きていますが、

But John has recorded this amazing story so that we will also know Jesus in His truth and grace;
ヨハネがこの驚くような話を書いたのは、私達もイエス様の恵みとまことを知るため、なのです。

and so that we will know ourselves through Jesus’ truth and grace.
そしてイエス様のめぐみとまこととを通して、自分自身を知るためにです。

Jesus comes to us to do what no-one else can do.
イエス様は他の誰にもできないことをするために来られました。

He comes to restore to us the respect of our humanity;
私達に人間としての尊厳を取り戻させるために

to offer us care in our suffering;
苦しみの中にある私達に癒しの手を差し伸べるために

and to give us eternal relationship and belonging.
私達に、永遠に変わることのないつながりと居場所を与えるために。

Jesus does this because of who He is.
イエス様がイエス様なので、そうされました。

Jesus is full of grace and truth.
イエス様は恵みとまことに満ちておられます。

Jesus IS grace and truth.
イエス様こそが恵みとまことそのものなのです。

Jesus declared, when we know this truth, the truth will set us free.
イエス様は、私達が真理を知る時、私達は自由にされると、言われました。

I deeply love this story, and I really look forward to digging deeper into it together from next time.
私はこの話が本当に大好きなので、次回さらに深く掘り下げて見ていきたいと思います。
